Those who adhered to the most strict interpretation of the Jedi Code advised members of the Order to eschew passion of all kinds. Intense emotions were difficult to contain. Uncontained emotion led to a lack of control, and to a relationship with the Force that invited the first tendrils of the Dark Side into one's thoughts.
Qui-Gon believed that such rigid thinking robbed a Jedi of the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the Living Force. He had done his best, in years past, to remove himself from emotional connections, to not feel, to only fulfill his duties to the Order. It had been an extreme reaction to the betrayal of his second apprentice, one that had required the intervention of Master Yoda, a young Jedi acolyte, and the Force itself to end. The years since had not been easy, exactly, but they had been rewarding. That young acolyte had become Qui-Gon's apprentice, in spite of the older Jedi's protests and doubts. Obi-Wan's training was the best thing Qui-Gon had ever done with his life.
Frankly, Qui-Gon hadn't quite known what to do without his padawan. It was understandable, then, that he would gladly tell his more conservative Jedi counterparts that he was entitled to his emotions as he anticipated Obi-Wan's arrival.
