Wanda got herself a drink for camouflage and positioned herself at a table near the bar, close enough that she could hear and sense the alien easily, but far enough away not to interfere with Buffy's interrogation. She hadn't been sure what to expect, but as Buffy drew more information from the blue-skinned alien, her focus was drawn from scanning the rest of the room. It really is vampires she thought as the interaction about the crucifix proceeded. She hadn't consciously doubted Buffy, but the confirmation was still a slight jolt. Somewhere deep down, she'd believed that vampires must be stories, worth checking out, but it would turn out to be stories, so to have them confirmed as real... But she couldn't think of any other reason for aliens to have crucifixes.
So vampires, from Earth, reacting to Earth religions...
And terrorizing this city. The blue-skinned alien was certainly terrorized. A little kernel of anger formed inside Wanda as the extent of that terror became clear to her.
The yelp, however restrained, reminded Wanda of the rest of her job -- not just listen and learn, but keep watch. A quick scan -- her attention fell on a human woman who seemed to be watching the interplay a little too closely. Wanda shifted, preparing to do -- well, something -- and that attention moved to her, not obvious, but Wanda could tell she was under observation. This one was sharp.
And then the alien stumbled by on a beeline for the door, and Wanda got distracted, the image of she -- vampire, ate partner, terror -- even through the haze of the alienness in his thoughts and emotions, all of that was so clear in the alien's mind that Wanda couldn't concentrate on anything else for a moment. When she looked back, the woman was gone.
Wanda considered the angles and slid from her chair, heading for where the back door had to be, down a hall by the restrooms. She was right, but she was also too late. No one was around except a dog sniffing a trash can. Wanda sighed, and returned to the main room, sitting down next to Buffy in the seat the blue-skinned alien had vacated. "Someone noticed us," she told Buffy. "She's gone now."
But in happier news, they had the name of a new place to check out. Wanda got out her holodevice, and brought up the map of Tenebris. It was tourist-grade stuff, but Dystrazia was there, with a few images. It was giant, the sort of place you could enter and never leave again, with multiple levels and dangerous looking spiral staircases climbing the cliffs. The description said that it had a public gambling area and a tiered system of private rooms, invitation only.
"Do vampires usually go for the top tier?" Wanda wondered, then added, "We'd better move fast." That woman could be off doing anything right now. It made her wary. Plus...vampires. "Take the offensive before someone comes to do more than look at us."
