Clint was exhausted. He collapsed on the seats of the rescue boat with weary resignation. Sokovia couldn't be saved, but its people had been. Most of them. One in particular would haunt him until the day he died. Pietro was laid out on the deck beside the row of seats Clint had claimed for a makeshift bed. Someone had closed Pietro's eyes. Probably Steve. A boy sat cradled in his mother's arms a few feet away, alive, like Clint, because Maximoff had shoved them out of the line of fire.
The Avengers had saved the people of Sokovia. With a little luck, Tony and Thor were about to save the rest of the world. Clint still felt hollow inside. You never got used to losing a member of the team.
If Wanda made it out, someone would have to break the news to her. Clint had a feeling she already knew Pietro was gone. The two were twins, and whatever Wanda had going on in her head, as much as Clint hated the idea of being subjected to it, was pretty strong. That didn't stop Clint from feeling she deserved to know how her brother had died.
The world greyed out. Clint thought he heard an explosion. The boat seemed to fall out from under him. Vertigo. Up, down, sideways ... he couldn't tell which was which. Then he was on decking, on his feet, only his balance was still shot, and he was pretty sure he was seeing things. It made a lot more sense than the other possibilities: that Fury had redecorated, or Clint was on a space station.
Clint promptly decided this was one of his worst weeks in recent memory.
