Sick
Who: Jasper and Thorne
Where: Lean-To
When: Early afternoon
Rating: G-ish
Jasper woke up in a kind of hazy not exactly right sort of way; the sort of waking up you do when you just want to roll over in the night. She was hot - too hot - and she felt sticky with sweat. Of course, her body - mostly her leg, but her face, too - wasn't going to let that happen, and she groaned softly in the sudden rather nauseating agony that welled up and melted across her head and leg.
Thorne had just appeared with his pot of shocklate to numb Jasper's wounds again and was surprised to see her stirring. He knelt down next to her and reached for her hand before she could dislodge the bandages. "Shhh...Jasper, it's Thorne. You've been badly injured. Don't touch the bandages okay?" He felt her forehead, she was still clammy and cool
"It's too hot." Jasper muttered, frowning at Thorne, but she settled down again. ...well, that was before she bolted upright. "Oh, Jesus, the kids. I need to get the kids out of the water. They'll freeze." And she made a valiant attempt at trying to get up, but between exhaustion, blood loss, pain, and generally feeling poorly, that didn't happen.
Having expected something similar, Thorne immediately pushed her down, "Jasper...shh. They're fine. Ken got them. They're safe. You need to be still, okay? I don't have a way to really stitch you up, so the more you can be still...the better." He stroked her hair back gently, "Just lay back, okay? I need to check your bandages and get you some more anesthetic ointment."
Jasper grabbed him by his collar, looking desperate. "You have to get them out of the water. It's too cold. And you have to tell the priest I... I found... I found the valley. You have to get the kids out of the water, and you have to tell him about the valley, okay? I'll be okay, I just need to get out of the water, too." Her eyes were glazed, and she was shaking her head, like she was trying to clear it. "It's too hot..."
He placed his hand on Jasper's forehead and bent over her so their faces were close together. "Jasper, the kids are safe. They're here. Kenneth got them out and Alex got you out. You're safe now. You're all safe. I promise." He could tell she was fevered and he didn't know how else to make her see that everything was okay. Well, it wasn't, she could die any minute now, but he wasn't going to tell her that.
Her hands gripped his collar, relaxed, and fell at her sides, and her head went down shortly thereafter. She was definitely making an effort to comprehend what was going on, but the world was alternately confusing and muddled. "Hurts..."
"Yeah," he agreed softly, keeping his voice low. "I know. We don't have much in the way of pain killers here." Thorne knew that Jasper wasn't really following, but he kept talking anyway as he slowly pulled packed moss off her head wounds. "Not much in the way of a lot of stuff and this really isn't my area of expertise, but..." Using a rock that kenneth had chipped into a narrowish spatula like thing, Thorne dipped out some shocklate. "This hurts but only for a second," he explained as he spread some over the wounds. They didn't look any better, but they didn't look worse either, so that was something at least.
A shudder ran through her when the plant stung viciously, but once the numbing properties set in, she visibly relaxed. In fact, Jasper had to struggle to keep her eyes open. There was information she needed to convey, and it was hard dredging them up from the bottom of the abyss that was consciousness. "L-lost Arlo in a sandssstorm, couldn't f-find him. Found a c-camp through the valley... oasis... all of us f-for at weeks..." she slurred out.
Thorne listened closely to the slurred words Jasper managed to stutter out, "Arlo came back. He's here." That was easy enough, but the rest? "We just moved here, we're fine for a bit, but I'll make sure Helena knows you've found another place too." Although, why they'd all want to trek through the desert to an oasis that would for a limited time, Thorne didn't know, especially as for now they were safe from Laughers. Of course, they were at risk for cold...maybe. He'd tell Helena or Ken at least.
Her eyes fluttered closed, then opened again. "You'll get the k-kids out of the water." It wasn't a question. It was more like a command than anything, but apparently one she fully expected him to obey no matter what because her eyes closed again and she didn't open them again for the day.
Clearly Jasper was delirious, but he nodded because well, the kids were already out of the water and were currently helping him get meds made for Jasper and those that were sick. He wrapped the bandages back into place and made sure she was covered. The last thing she needed was her body using extra energy to stay warm instead of to heal. When he was sure she was settled again, Thorne got up and went in search of Helena, a promise was a promise after all.
