Olivia's Arrival- Where did all the flowers go?
Who: Olivia, Payne & Seth
Where: The field
When:
Week 1, Day 6, dawn
What:
Arriving
Rated:
PG-13 (Language, Mention of self harm)

Olivia had fallen asleep the night before behind a dumpster located in one of the alleyways that led off Melrose Avenue. She had been with a new client that night. A middle-aged man who didn’t believe in paying for his prostitutes. Instead he had left the young woman scared and beaten in a deserted alley once he was finished with her.

For a while she had lay there, completely motionless with her jeans tugged down her frail body. After a half hour or so the cold cement against the bare skin of her scarred legs became unbearable and she forced herself to find the strength to move just enough to pull her jeans back up her legs, covering the fresh scratches and bruises on her thighs from the man she had been with.

One arm wrapped under her backpack as she pulled it under her head, her entire body curling close to it for several reasons. The main reason being that she was warmest in a balled-up position and another being that nobody would be able to steal it without waking her.

That night she dreamed of her earlier nights of living on the streets. She had respect for herself then. The things that had happened to her, the things that broken her and made her who she was today; these were the things that constantly haunted her on the rare night she was able to sleep. Perhaps it was because of these nightmares that when she opened her eyes that morning in a field of strange grass she was not surprised.

It was frighteningly familiar. Not the grass, of course. Or the extremely thick fog. But the terror that came with waking up in a strange place that you could not recognize. It had happened before, countless times. She’d go to sleep once place and wake up somewhere else with half of her clothes missing and a drowsy feeling as if she had been drugged.

The strange thing was that she didn’t feel drowsy now and after a quick glance down at herself confirmed that she had all of her clothes. Her black tank top with the stains on it, her jeans that were a couple sizes too big and ripped, her Army jacket that had probably seen several owners before her, and her red converse that were complete with holes from being worn so much.

Her stomach growled as her slender fingers tightened around the strap of her backpack and she pushed herself up to her feet. It took her a moment to find her balance before she slowly looked around. Her lifeless gaze scanned the trees and the surrounding area before the familiar feeling of tears stinging her eyes. She was scared. Not because she was lost in this strange place that looked nothing like the cement world she inhabited in New York, but because she didn’t know what was real and what was the product of her unstable mentality.

Nervously her fingers crept down to her opposite wrist, working their way down under the blue bandanna that she had used to cover some of the fresh cuts she had made. Roughly she dug her nails into the wound, drawing a sharp hiss of pain from her as she looked around again. Suddenly she saw movement through the thick fog that surrounded her and the tears that had welled in her eyes started to stream down her cheeks as fear overcame her. Slowly she brought a hand up to her cheek, wiping away some of the tears. Suddenly she winced, feeling that the area around her left eye was swollen and bruised.

Th fog was thick, but the figure that walked through it strode with confident steps, no timidity at all as her booted feet crushed the grass and left a dark trail behind her. Of course, some of that was bravado. Payne was, in part, too numbed to really feel fear at her new situation, when she was in crisis, her first response was perfect calmness, and action. So she was taking action. With a strip of the sheet she'd shown up in wrapped around her waist, she walked through the fog, thinking to herself that she'd better be quick. Because who knew what the others would say of her idea. Because they were supposed to leave soon after dawn, and she wanted at least to try her idea out.

Of course, she wasn't expecting, in the middle of her reverie, to stumble right into another person. It was the last thing she was expecting, in fact, and so Payne had little time to censor either her speech or her surprise.

"Shit! Where'd you come from?"

The second somebody walked into her, Olivia fell. She was a weak, little thing and while whatever had walked into her didn't feel to be much bigger than herself, it had still be enough to break the panic-stricken young woman's balance.

"Ophf," she exclaimed as she reached out with her arm, hoping to break her fall. Unfortunately she was too slow and the next thing she knew she was back on her stomach in the grass. The pressure from the ground caused the self inflicted cuts across her stomach to sting painfully as she pushed herself back up to her feet once more.

"I-I'm s-sorry," she stuttered, taking a moment as she spun around in the fog to find the person she had collided with. And then she heard a voice and it calmed her slightly that it was the voice of a fellow female.

"I-I..was.." the brunette started as she hugged her arms tightly across her chest. She didn't like this, she didn't like it at all. The fog made it difficult to see and her entire body was sore, especially that sensitive little spot between her legs that caused her more damage in her life than anything else.

Nervously she licked her lips, slowly looking around again. "There-there was a man. And-and.. he-he was b-bad. Then-then I went to sleep. There-there w-was a dump-dumpster and then.. and then I was here." When she spoke her voice was barely more than a whisper, in hopes that whoever had brought her there wasn't able to hear them.

Shit. This was bad. This was badfuckthiswassobadbadbad..... Payne's mind took a moment to slow down. It always ran a little too fast for perfect sanity, but at the moment she'd shifted into hyperdrive, and forced her body to extent it's hands to the fragile-looking girl and haul her to her feet. Payne was processing what the girl had said, and before her mind even got through it all, her emotions coloured her vision with a red-hot flash of pure rage, protective instinct. Men. It always came back to fucking men, didn't it? Instantly she was stroking the girl's arms, trying to be as soothing as she knew how.

"Shit. I'm sorry. Lissen." her voice was low, urgent. "You lissen t'me. He's not here. He's not here, and he's not gonna get you. Okay? I promise." What the fuck was that, a promise? She didn't make promises to anyone...it had just slipped out. "I don't 'zactly know where we are, but you aren't where you were, and actually sounds like that's a good thing." it had all spilled from her mouth, quickly and without care. "Not gonna let anythin' get you."

Olivia flinched slightly at first when the other girl touched her, but she easily let the other girl pull her up to her feet. While most girls in her situation were forced to toughen up to survive on the street, Olivia never had. She never fought back when she was being hurt, she didn't think it was her place. If somebody hurt her, then they must have reason to do it and that meant that she deserved it. Or at least that's how it all worked in Olivia's shattered thoughts.

The feeling of her fingers on her arm was somewhat comforting, even though it made her arms sting slightly from all the cuts that were covered by the sleeves of her well worn jacket.

"This-this is-isn't New.. New York?" she asked, even though this was rather obvious. Olivia lacked common sense, most likely caused by being hit in the head too many times. Her eyes welled with tears again. She didn't like surprises. She didn't like the unknown. She liked to know what was happening and what was going to happen.

"Okay. It's like this." a deep breath. "People have been showin' up here - all from the US so far - here in this field." Which pointed toward it being some sort of government conspiracy or experiment, she'd decided. That fit in well with the world she knew, so it was what she was going with. "I guess we all just fell asleep wherever, and we wake up here." a pause. "It's pretty weird here, but we're gonna be okay. We're gonna survive. There's food, and water, and we have a camp up in this huge-ass tree." The teen paused to take a breath.

"Yeah? So don't freak out. It's gonna be fine. I promise." there was that treacherous word again. How did that keep slipping in?

Olivia was taking all this in as best as she could. People were waking up in a strange field and it was going to be okay. She failed to see how waking up in a strange field, where people randomly showed up, was going to be okay. But that was all forgotten by one tiny, itsy-bitsy, two letter word.

The older girl's eyes widened in horror. "Up?" she repeated faintly, bringing her arms to hug them tightly across her chest again. She didn't like the sound of being up in anything, especially a 'huge-ass tree.' She preferred to keep herself on solid ground. She didn't swim, for the reason that water was untrustworthy and gave no support and it was for that reason that she didn't like heights. Air was even less supportive than water. Not only that, but how was a girl with absolutely no strength supposed to climb a tree? The whole idea of camping in a tree was possibly the most frightening thing she had ever heard.

"Yeah, we gotta sleep up there, because there are these...y'know, maybe I'll cover that later." Payne had only known this new girl for a matter of seconds, but already she could tell that this was definitely a 'handle with care' sort of situation. "But y'know, don't worry about it. Seriously. We're gonna be fine." Slowly Payne took the other girl's hand, closing her own around it gently.

"So I got up early, I was gonna try fishing. But I think I'd better get you back to camp, yeah?" a pause, and her expression was earnest and for one, completely honest. "Trust me, okay?"

"Is-is it very high?" Olivia asked softly, even though it probably wouldn't matter. It could have been a very small tree, only two or three feet of the ground and Olivia would still be panicking. It was strange that a girl who could live on the streets of New York, amidst violence and murder feared nothing more than heights and large bodies of water.

Her hand was still trembling as Payne took it in her own and closed her fingers around it. Normally she flinched whenever she was touched, but her thoughts were moving in slow-motion at that point in time and by the time she realized anything was happening it had already happened. "Are-are there a-a lot of p-people?" she asked curiously, as she wasn't that fond of crowds. But that was the least of her current worries. What if there was a lot of them and they didn't have enough food? Olivia wouldn't dare eat their food if it would cause a shortage. Or what if their camp wasn't big enough for more people? Would she be in the way?

Slowly her free hand reached for the wrist connected to the hand that the younger girl was holding. Automatically her fingers slipped underneath the bandanna and her nails dug into one of the many cuts that covered her wrist. "I-I don't want to-to be in any-anyone's way,"she added in a voice that was barely more than a whisper.

Payne took a moment to look over at the other girl. She fought to keep her emotions in cheque. She pushed down the protectiveness she felt, the need to make this girl allright again. She knew the type., Where she'd gotten hard on the street, some people just got broken. She hated to see it, but what could you do? Just look out for them as best you could, and trust that to take over for their own skills at survival. Payne tended not to let herself care, but sometimes it was hard not to.

"It's a bit high. And there's a few of us so far, yeah. But lissen t'me, you're gonna be fine, ok? You can't let yourself be scared. I'll help you. I'm gonna..." she almost said that she'd look after the other girl. her mouth clapped closed, and she looked down for a moment, face stony. "Look, you need to just trust me. You're gonna be fine. You can deal with this. I...they'll help you."

"I don't want to make anyone mad," Olivia said faintly as she let Payne lead her across the field and to wherever it was they were going. She was silent for the most part as the walked. Usually she wasn't much of a talker, except for the million questions she asked people out of curiosity. But other than that, she was silent except for the occasional apology or to ask somebody if they were mad.

It was all a lot for her to take in as they walked. She was use to cement sidewalks, blacktop roads and glass skyscrapers. There was none of that here however, and even though it was eerie and unfamiliar, it was still beautiful in her opinion. And while the humidity was a bit unbearable with her jacket on, she didn't dare take it off and reveal the cuts, scars and bruises that covered her frail arms.

"I-I'm Olivia," she said suddenly, her voice still soft and nearly impossible to hear. "Just-just Olivia. That-that's all I know."

"Yeah?" A quick look at the girl, and Payne made a mental catalogue of all the bruising she could see. The anger rose in her again, but she shut it away. It wasn't the time. This wasn't what she needed now.

"I'm Payne. Just Payne. It's good to meecha, Olivia. You're the first person I've found." she gave a reassuring grin.

"Hey, we've got a doctor-type at the came. He can give you some stuff for pain."

"P-Payne," Olivia repeated, knowing that if she didn't she would easily forget the other girl's name. Of course, she was probably going to forget it anyway, but she would at least make an effort.

"How-how long have-have you been here?" she asked faintly as they walked, doing her best to keep up with Payne. Olivia wasn't slow, but her short attention span prevented her from ever paying much attention to what she was doing and therefore it took her a rather long time to get anything done.

At the mention of a doctor she shook her head slowly. She hadn't been to a doctor since she was a little girl in foster care and her foster parents had made her. "I-I don't m-mind pain," she admitted as she looked back down at the ground. "I-I usually de-deserve it," she added, before reaching out with a trembling hand and pushing up her sleeve a few inches. She then gave a small tug and pulled off the bloody bandanna that covered her wrist. Her skin was covered in fresh cuts and old scars. "See?" she said as she held her arm out for the other girl to see, as if this was going to somehow prove she deserved being hurt.

Payne felt her heart sink as her eyes took in the multitude of injury on the other girl's arms. She knew that not everyone could be strong. Not everyone could get tough, fight back. But the sight of that injury on a girl that seemed so harmless and even nice made her angry. Angry enough to turn suddenly, taking Olivia by the shoulders.

"Lissen. Fuck that. Fuck that. You don't deserve shit. The world sucks, but you can't let it do that to ya. Okay? I don't wanna hear you say that again."

She wasn't sure where all that had come from. It had just bubbled out, and as she released the other, she felt a little embarrassed. "It's just. This shit ain't your fault."

Olivia flinched as the other girl suddenly turned on her. Her eyes quickly snapped closed, clenched together tightly as if she was bracing herself for some horrible punishment that she didn't want to see coming. "Pl-please don't," she begged in a voice so soft she might as well been mouthing the words.

Her entire body started trembling at Payne's sudden outburst. She heard the girl's words, but they didn't make sense to her. She did deserve it. Her thoughts went to the knife in the backpack she wore. She would be so lost without it.

"Yes-yes it is," she replied once she was out of Payne's grasp. She was still trembling. "It-it is my f-fault."

Payne felt a sick feeling in her belly. It wasn't a familiar feeling, or one she had any preparation for.

Was this what guilt felt like?

"I just. I don't wanna hear you said that. 'cause it ain't true, an'...that's all. It just ain't, so don't say it. 'kay?" a sigh, annoyed and upset.

"And jesus, I'm not gonna hurt you, okay?"

Olivia hugged her arms tightly across her chest, suddenly feeling afraid. She blinked a few times, trying to regather her thoughts. Everything was a mess in her head. It was all so overwhelming. This strange place. This girl. The feeling of not knowing where she was and why she was there.

"But-but you don't know if-if it's t-true or n-not," she said weakly, afraid that if she spoke any louder than a whisper it might make the girl even angrier.

"Every-everyone says they're not going to.. to hurt me." She hugged herself tighter.

"Yeah, well I'm one who means it, ok?" Payne *was* annoyed, but it wasn't the fault of this tiny, cringing girl. It was the whole, hopeless situation. "I mean it. I'm not gonna hurt you. Ain't never gonna. So don't be scared, ok?"

It was doing no good. With a heavy sigh, she just started leading Olivia back to camp. "Look, I'm gonna have the doctor help you, then...I dunno, maybe Helena can...shit, I dunno. I'm not good at this." she realised she was talking mostly to herself, but was to upset and distracted at the moment to care. "You're gonna be fine. I ain't gonna let anythin' happen to you."

Seth battled his way through the bands of fog that tried to drag him back into the darkness of drunken unconsciousness. He wanted to wake up, wanted to move, but his body was uncooperative. Pain registered in various degrees throughout this body, soreness creeping through him but the extensive pain was in his head. Oh God, his head. It pounded in sync with his heartbeat, every throb a stab to his retinas. He managed to drag an arm up to his face, his palm cradling the side of his head as a soft groan passed his lips. The pain was almost unbearable but it helped in making him wake up more fully, giving him the push he needed to open his eyes. His vision was blurred, unfocused and he registered voices from not far away. He wasn’t sure who the voices belonged to but he couldn’t focus long enough to locate where the voices was coming from.

It took several blurred blinks of his eyes to finally get his vision focused. The moment he finally opened his eyes, a grassy field as far as his eyes could see stared back at him. Huh? It took him several long moments but he remembered being at Xander’s house, the two of them getting shit-faced only for him to pass out on his friend’s couch, which made this even more confusing. Where in the hell was he? He rolled onto his knees, lifting himself up some to look at his surroundings, both of his hands coming up to rub at his eyes. He must be dreaming, that was the only logical explanation. But even as he blinked a few more times and looked again, he got the same result.

He quickly snapped his head to the side when he heard the two feminine voices again, his deep blue eyes landing on two slender women, one stuttering like an idiot and the other acting as if she were trying to help. He wasn’t sure, he was still completely confused. He closed his eyes, bringing a hand back up to his head to try and ease the painful throbbing. This had to be some joke; Xander clearly drove him to some country field and dropped him out. He was also sure there was a camera near by, or even Xander himself ready to spring out and say, "Gotcha!" or something along those lines. But if that were so, where did the two women come from? He glanced over at them one last time, clearing his throat before finding his voice, "Hey!" he called out, his voice coming out hoarse but he figured that if anyone could help him in his situation, it would be one of the two of them.

"I-I just w-want to go back to wh-where I was be-before," Olivia admitted honestly. She would rather be on the cold streets of New York, a victim to violent crimes, than be there in that unknown and strange place.

Suddenly a loud voice startled her. She jumped, nearly colliding with Payne. It was a male voice and that instantly had her on edge. Nervously she spun around, trying to locate the direction that the voice was coming from. Unknowingly she inched closer to the other girl.

Without thinking, the teen moved between Olivia and the interloper, putting her body up as a sort of shield. "Who're you?" she knew, logically, that Helena and the others had told her that people just showed up here - but her emotions were still affecting her, put into motion by Olivia's first stammered words.

"Is that him, Olivia?" she demanded. "Is that the guy?"

Olivia peered cautiously around Payne's shoulder to get a better look at the man who had approached them. Slowly she shook her head. "No-no, I-I don't know him," she admitted.

Suddenly her eyes went wide with fear at the realization that Payne must not have known this man, otherwise she would not have asked Olivia if he was the man she had been with in New York.

She disappeared behind Payne again, arms hugged tightly across her chest in a defensive manner.

Is that him? The question took Seth by surprise as he stumbled to his feet, wavering a little on his legs from the pounding throb that pulsated through his brain, "Goddamn," he muttered under his breath, his hand lifting to rub at his temples. Instead of answering the other girl's question, he just merely looked at them, confusion written all over his face, "Who the hell are you?" he asked instead, still thinking this had to be some sort of joke. Well, he'd had enough laughs if it was, this was beginning to freak him out a little.

He closed his eyes slowly, the air humid and making it hard to breathe. He could feel a bead of sweat popping up across his forehead and he quickly wiped it away, "Where the fuck are we?" he demanded to know but by the looks of the two women, they weren't going to tell him. They looked just as confused and scared as he was.

Olivia peered around Payne's shoulder a little more, her lifeless gaze slowly looking the man over through the dark strands of hair that covered her bruised face. "I-I'm Olivia," she said, flinching with each forceful word that left his mouth. She hugged one arm across her chest, as she let her nails return to one of the cuts on her wrist.

When he asked where they were she glanced to Payne, hoping the other girl could explain more. "We-we're n-not in New-New York," she stuttered weakly. It was very common for her to state the obvious, as the obvious was all she ever really noticed.

"We're not in Chicago either, in case you're wondering." Payne knew she should be kinder, that they all showed up here bewildered and out-of-sorts. But she didn't like this guy's tone.

"And don't you dare get all mad at us. We woke up here same as you did. There are others, too. We go to sleep wherever, and wake up here." a pause. "I'm pretty sure it's an alien planet." she said, face blank. All the while she was still shielding Olivia with her body, making sure to keep between the other girl and this new guy.

Chicago? He had been in Chicago and now he was here, wherever here was. He was convinced that he was dreaming which made him start laughing uncontrollably. A dream, a fucking dream, although it sure as hell didn't feel like a dream. His laughter ceased and he glanced over at the two women with questioning eyes, "An alien planet?" he asked with a raised eyebrow. Had this woman lost her mind? He shook his still aching head and sighed softly, "I am not mad..."

No, he wasn't mad but he was confused and a little disoriented. Wherever they were at didn't look like any place he had ever seen before, "I am Seth," he said after a moment, deciding to play the nice card. He wouldn't get any answers if he was being an asshole, "There is more people?" he asked in a calmer tone but keeping his distance from them. He didn't trust anyone and he wasn't about to start.

Olivia's eyes widened as he started to laugh, before stopping suddenly to ask them another set of questions. Inch-by-inch she slowly crept out from behind the protection of Payne's body. "Don't-don't be s-scared," she stammered softly, even though the bruised features of her face proved that she was possibly the most scared out of the three of them. The frightening feeling of this unknown place, combined with her constant habit of blaming herself for everything that happened in the world, was not a good combination for somebody as physically and mentally weak as she was.

As the man went on, about his name and asking about the other people she could feel a painful cramp forming in her stomach. Anxiety was sinking in and she blinked a few times, trying to stop the world from swaying side to side. But it was no use and suddenly she tore her frightened eyes away from Seth while pulling away from Payne, only to lean towards the ground a few feet away and vomit. It stung her throat and empty stomach badly, but did nothing to calm her nerves.

Payne had been just about to answer when she felt Olivia's body pull away from hers. She turned and stared, instantly moving to take the other girl's shoulders and pull the hair from her eyes almost tenderly. Oh, lord! Look what this place was doing to her, how in hell was she going to be allright here? "Shh, shh. It's gonna be fine."

Her face turned to Seth, sharply.
"Are, genius." Payne said, her face a stony mask. "There are more people, and they're at this big tree that we're just headin' for now. An' you can come, whatever. I don't give a shit."

"I think I'll pass," Seth said in response, the idea of flying solo better than sticking around with these two women, one of whom was vomiting all over the place, the other having an attitude, "I think I'll just..." he looked around, not sure where to go but it was better than following them around, "Whatever."

He turned away from them, walking in the opposite direction. He didn't know where he was going but he kept walking, each step taking him further away from the comfort of not being alone. Even still, not once did he look back, he would do this on his own.

Olivia could fear tears stinging her eyes as she wiped her brow on the back of her hand, wishing the painfully tight not in her stomach would go away. However it was all forgotten as the man that had approached them refused Payne's invitation about going back to the camp.

Her head quickly shot up, looking in Seth's direction with a nervous look on her pale face. "You-you don't w-want to go with-" she trailed off as the man turned and left before she could finish her question. It was impossible for her to think that he had left out of his own free will, instead she assumed he had left because of her. Her eyes welled with tears again as she rubbed slowly at her stomach, which was still burning.

"I-I'm really sorry," she told Payne softly, before looking down at her stomach. She lifted her shirt a few inches to look at the pale skin, unable to put together the fact that her stomach was hurting because she had thrown up. She blamed the pain on a dark, foot-shaped bruise on scarred flesh of her stomach.

"Don't be sorry." Payne said, and struggled to make her voice a little softer, kind. "He can go do what he wants. He wants to go, he can go. I'm not gonna force him to come with." She gave Olivia a soft smile.

"You feelin' any better? We should get you some food. At least water." Her hand still rubbed Olivia's back gently, her eyes trying to avoid the bruise.

Olivia lowered her shirt, easily forgetting about the pain. Her attention was never on any one thing for very long, as she wasn't a very thoughtful person and could never find a reason to dwell on anything.

Finally she straightened back up, giving a small nod. "I-I'm f-fine," she stammered weakly, her gaze looking off into the distance in the direction they were heading. "Are they mean people?" she asked in a whisper.

Payne blinked a bit. Mean? Olivia seemed strange, almost child-like in a way. She considered a moment.

"Mean? Umm. I dunno, really. I guess not. Anyhow, nobody's gonna mistreat you. Okay? You got nothin' to worry about."

Olivia nodded, pretending to believe this girl even though Olivia knew that she would worry no matter what. But her years on her street had taught her that it was sometimes safer to lie, just to make another person happy.

She paused, leaning over towards the ground again as she started to gag. For a few short seconds she remained like this, but when she didn't throw up she slowly straightened up again. Her stomach was in knots and her head was spinning, but it was somewhat familiar to her. Her arms returned to her chest as she hugged herself tightly. "I-I'm not worried," she lied faintly as they started walking again.
