Jasper's feet were weighing her down. Well, not really, if you wanted to get technical about it. In fact, technically speaking, feet are actually quite buoyant in comparison to, say, and equivalently shaped block of steel. That said, Jasper felt like she was being dragged down. Maybe it was half the lake she accidentally swallowed. This whole swimming-while-injured-and-insanely-cold thing was for the goddamn birds.
Her lungs were burning, insult to the injuries she already had, and it felt like every time she looked she was under the water again, with the stars distorted and dizzily twisting with the ripple action of the water above her. She was shivering violently and felt thick and stupid and so very, very tired.
Eventually, the stars stopped spinning, because she closed her eyes and couldn't see them any more.
