WHO: Kate Bishop (and mentions of Eli Bradley)
WHAT: Looking out for a...friend.
WHERE: Eli's room in the hospital.
WHEN: Sunday Evening
RATING: PG (Nothing graphic, but they are sitting in his hospital room.)
"I win again," Kate said as she collected the last bit of worn playing cards. War was probably the worst game to play as she sat beside Eli's bed, but it was the only two player game that would actually work. There were others of course, but where was the fun in playing Poker or Go Fish? At least War would still have the element of surprise. Shuffling the cards, she bridged the dog-eared and ripped deck before setting them aside. She had played at least five games on her own. Kate had been silently hoping that Eli would have woken up just for a second to throw a smarmy comment at her. She would have even been happy if he would have scolded on how ridiculous she looked playing a card game with herself. The response would have been equally snark-filled as it always was when they started on each other. She wanted to hear that sarcastic bite in his voice; wanted to hear him question her or just say 'hello'. Kate had not left Eli's bedside since she had found his room. His beaten and battered state had brought back too many memories that she had tried so hard to suppress. It was not the first time Kate had seen Eli in that sort of condition, but that did not mean that it wasn't easy to see it. For once, Kate was thankful to be away from the busy life of being part of the Young Avengers and the Avengers. It gave her the chance to sit with Eli and keep him company. There would forever be the wondering of how she had gotten here and how they would get home, but even that had taken a backseat. Eli was all that mattered to her in the now. Sitting back in the chair she had temporarily borrowed from the hallway, Kate let out a heavy sigh. There had to be something she could do. She was even ready to try yelling in his ear, but what good would that do? What if it put him into cardiac arrest or shock? That was the last thing she wanted to do: cause Eli even more strain. The nervous shifting and adjusting in the chair started again, and Kate finally leaned forward. Taking Eli's hand, she cradled it between her own. "I know you're still there, Stars and Stripes. I need you to wake up and help me out here, okay? For once, I won't threaten to punch you if you want to be the macho hero. I kind of need that right now." The silence hung heavy in the room. There was only that annoying beep that all hospitals had. Kate hated it more than anything because it meant that something else was keeping you alive. "Eli, wake up." Glancing down, Kate realized she was squeezing his hand. Practically hugging it against her, she loosened her grip before letting his hand fall back onto the hospital bed. Finally sitting back, Kate hugged her knees up against her chest. Curling up as best she could in the chair, she just watched and waited. He would wake up, and when he did? She would be waiting for him. |
