It is highly similar to many brands, such as Battlestar Galactica, Serenity and Star Trek to name the few I've seen noted. I'm sure there are others and perhaps ones waiting to be discovered by people who would love them and no longer enjoy what they're watching.
You can switch to that -- as you pointed out, as it trades on nostalgia, it will continue on without you and if you should find something else you like in it at a later date, no one is saying you have to buy all or nothing with it. There are no ironclad rules or inquisitions that will drag you to the dungeons for saying you bought say the Thrawn Triology, but that you have never watched the first three films because you feel you would not enjoy them.
