They said you nested when you were pregnant, but so far, Mara really hadn't had much instinct to do anything that she would consider to be true 'nesting'. Yes, she had taken care of a number of practical things, such as where the baby would sleep, and security systems, but nesting seemed like it would imply making things particularly homey, and really Mara hadn't done much of that - at least nothing outside of the ordinary. Regardless it was an interesting thing to try to accomplish when you were on the move. But this past week with Carol's giving birth, maybe it had reminded her that she really didn't have that much time left before she and Nick would have a little person of their own that they would need to sort through. And while she and Nick had gone around in circles about how they would take care of that person, Mara knew only that it would involve actually taking care of the little person herself, while pulling in someone that she trusted to assist with the rest. That second part was a little more difficult. Mara hadn't lived the events of the Yuuzhan Vong war. She hadn't lived the events of having Ben as a baby when the galaxy was collapsing around her, but she had read all of those events, and she knew them well enough to know that she had made it work then. But then there had been the Jedi - and then she had put him in a place that she thought was safe, only to be unaware of the dangers that lurked there. Dangers Ben was saved from only because he pulled in from the Force on his own because of the pain and discomfort accessing it caused him at that age. Here the dangers would be different - no Sith that anyone was aware of and no dark Jedi. No Yuuzhan Vong, in theory, and no Abeloth who might tempt him away. But there was HYDRA and Nick was right about that. There were telepaths, and those that could prove dangerous in their own ways - particularly while their child was young. Mara sat down on the sofa and stared at the window on the far wall. Sometimes it seemed as if she had arrived only yesterday, while other times it felt like forever. Sometimes she wondered how much longer she would stay here -- would she see her baby get to walk? Would she see her get to talk? And when she left, as she inevitably would - who would watch her daughter? Would Nick shuffle her off? One of the people that Mara might have considered asking to help under that circumstance, one who had been here as long as she had - whom she had befriended over trying to determine what exactly had happened to them - had been sent back so there would be no asking Sam. Perhaps she could talk to Natasha about it - it felt somewhat as if anyone would have a suggestion, it might be Natasha. In the meantime, she pushed herself to her feet again, griping about the awkward stretched feeling her belly was giving her underneath her breath. The entire sensation of being pregnant was utterly rubbish and Mara was beginning to regret having committed to it. Except… not really. She walked across to the room that would be her daughter's room, and she looked at the crib, and with a small smile on her face Mara picked up a nail to hang artwork. Because even if the room was simplicity and minimalism - every youngling deserved a little bit of a nest. |
