Even after she was all ready, it still took some time for Betty to decide whether or not she was really going to this party. She always felt a little bit like she was on the outside when it came to her position at Stark Industries and her limited relationship with the Avengers. It was Bruce that had reached out to her, when the world was struck by some supernatural plague and the earth was tested by some celestial being, and from then on - like always - she and Banner just kept missing each other. She just felt like shallow pleasantries at a Christmas party on his birthday would be too much. They used to do things together during this time of year, like curling up on the sofa and laughing and the pitiful exam scores of some of his students. It had been their time, and seeing him would just make it so much more glaringly obvious that now wasn't then. But she'd go to the party. She'd say hello to her new interns and to the staff. Talk to the other Avengers who were interested in talking to her. She would have a nice time because she wanted to, and Bruce had nothing to do with that. * * * When she'd asked Steve Rogers to dance, she hadn't really expected that he'd say yes. And from the look on his face, he hadn't really expected himself to say yes either. But she was glad to get a moment to talk to him, without other people trying to nudge themselves into a conversation with Captain America. She hadn't really gotten the chance to speak to him, once Stark Expo preparation had started, but they ended up talking more about the strange events that had transpired earlier in the week, and whether or not they were excited to see Star Wars, then they spent really catching up. Afterwards, Betty found herself hovering around the drink table, under the caterer's 'gluten free' mulled wine sign. She took the green glass mug as it was handed to her by a waiter, and stirred the warm beverage with its cinnamon stick. She was started to feel a little more confident about her decision to come, but then -- She hadn't seen Bruce yet. |
