The whole idea of talking to Dimitri over the network was so she could say what she needed to say and have him tell her what was bothering him without having to argue face-to-face or be limited to 140 characters, but by the third time she'd considered telling him there was a possibility she couldn't stay with him, she knew things were getting out of hand anyway and she'd need to actually see him. She'd even tried purposely misunderstanding him in order to get him to explain himself, but that hadn't worked like she'd hoped, leaving Rose no choice but to meet him in person...and run the risk of actually breaking up because they weren't very good at not escalating things. The very possibility sat like a heavy weight in her chest as she abandoned her route to head back toward the tower, to the place she liked to eat in the middle of her patrols. Only this time, she didn't go inside, she went to the alley beside it and leaned against the wall of the building; she didn't want to cause a scene in a place she frequented, after all. While she waited for Dimitri, she chewed her nails, the inside of her mouth, her lip--anything and everything to try and ease her anxiety while still keeping up her nerve; it would be so easy to take one look at him and push away the fact that they needed to work this out, to just naively believe that love along would fix everything and carry them. Being an adult in an adult relationship was hard and stupid, she decided. |
