"Agent Solo, with me," Mara Jade spoke loudly enough to grab the attention of her niece as she stepped away from Nick Fury's side to go take charge of some other pieces of this project. It had been over a year since she'd been on a helicarrier, but she'd spent enough time on one in her days before SHIELD had fallen apart that the layout was familiar and Mara didn't think she'd have any difficulty finding the weapons bay. Having successfully retrieved the helicarrier was only part of the plan, after all. Nick had his helicarrier, and the next part would be to help the Avengers fulfill their plan - and hopefully they were to succeed because Mara knew enough about Ultron to know that if they didn't - well, like many other situations she'd found herself in through the years, they simply had to succeed. There was no do not, there was only do, and if they failed this world would pay the cost of it. As she headed them down a metal staircase, her senses still alert for any additional former crew that hadn't been rounded up and dispersed elsewhere, she glanced back over her shoulder. She had been proud of Jaina for volunteering for this - and not particularly surprised. After all, she would have done precisely the same thing in Jaina's position -- to be perfectly honest with herself that was how she had found herself in a safehouse with the then former director and a number of other SHIELD agents. "There should be weapons in the rooms along this corridor," she explained briefly. "We're doing a visual check of inventory just to be certain we have anything close to what the manifests say we have. And if Sitwell has done his work properly," she ran a card through a lock and it turned green and Mara smiled. "We shouldn't have to use the Force to open doors. There we are." Jaina hadn’t hesitated when she’d seen the request for help on the network. She had been waiting for something like this, a way to prove herself. Not that she didn’t enjoy the work she did with the White Team but this was something entirely different and maybe to show the people of this world what she was capable of. She followed Mara into the room and looked around. “Okay so what are we looking for exactly? You’ve got a list I assume. Room looks pretty well stocked.” There were a number of weapons in the room, some she recognized, some she didn’t. “Gotta say I’d be more comfortable if someone handed me a blaster, I can shoot one of these but yeah...I’d rather have a blaster.” It was possibly her training as the Emperor's Hand, but Mara had yet to meet a weapon she couldn't handle - including most of the weapons on this planet. Yes, she'd prefer her holdout blaster, and thanks to the Tesseract she had that among the weapons she packed when in SHIELD uniform, but she could handle anything SHIELD could throw at her. These, largely military grade semi-automatics, did pack a slightly different punch than the rifles stormtroopers carried at home - the best comparison that Mara could come up with - but they were tolerable and anything was better than nothing against an enemy. She nodded though and tossed Jaina a smile. "Talk to the Tesseract, it got friendly and sent me my weapon chest a while back. Right now though, we'll work with what we've got." Mara handed a tablet over to Jaina and nodded. "Right hand column has expected numbers. Right now we're not doing a complete inventory - just eyeball it - there probably are some missing under the circumstances, but what we mostly want to be certain is that we have approximately what we think we do. Check rows 1 - 20B - they'll be that direction and let's meet back up here by the door and then we'll check the next one." Jaina took the pad and nodded. “I do need to talk to the Tesseract, there are a few things I want to show up here. Unfortunately I don’t know where they keep it.” She grinned. “I will take care of this.” She headed off to do what her aunt had asked her, checking each of the weapons, making sure they were where they were supposed to be. Mara was right, a few things were missing but for the most part, the list was accurate. When she finished she returned to the designated spot and handed the pad back to Mara. “Most everything is there, a couple of things aren’t, I marked them on the list. There was one that looked damaged but you might want to take a look since I’m not entirely certain what it’s supposed to look like. It’s not familiar to me.” She watched her aunt look at the list and then she finally said what she’d been dying to say ever since she’d figured it out and they were alone so this was probably her only chance. “So that’s him, huh?” Jaina said casually. Mara grinned at Jaina and headed off to take a look through her own set of shelves. There would be time for accurate inventory later, but right now the most important thing was having some practical knowledge of what they had access to and what could help them and the Avengers as it was needed. As she came back she was able to note Jaina's list and plug the data in to feed it back to others who would be able to control it a bit better. Jaina's final words didn't particularly come as a surprise. It would have been obvious from the way they interacted that she and Nick were used to working together, and Jaina knew enough of what Mara had been doing over the past few months to be able to put two and two together. She selected send on the tablet to update the data with their current suspicions, and looked over at her niece. "That's him," she affirmed quietly. “Thought so,” Jaina said. “I kind of thought it might be when he popped up on the network yesterday out of nowhere and since I’ve been here, you tend to kind of pop up out of nowhere from time to time. Plus you’ve told me just enough for me to know that what you’re doing isn’t common knowledge.” She smiled. “and you’re obviously used to working together, anyone can see that.” For a moment Jaina paused and then she looked over at Mara. “I didn’t want to like him or want to know him or anything because when I first got here, everything that I believed about my life was turned upside down. The only good thing was Anakin wasn’t dead.” She sighed. “you and Uncle Luke weren’t together, my parents were...I don’t even know who they were but they weren’t my parents and then there was Jacen. So I decided that if I ever met your mystery person I would give him a piece of my mind but you know what? I haven’t actually said more than three words to him yet but I do like him, he cares about people, maybe he’s not warm and fuzzy about it but I can sense that about him, he really does care. I also might have kind of used the Force to see if he was for real but he is. Although you already know that.. He didn’t have to stick his neck out to help the Avengers but he is, he wants to do the right thing for the world. I can get behind that.” She laughed. “and for the record, I didn’t want to like Carol either for the same reasons but I like her too. I’ve actually talked to her more but yeah, maybe you and Uncle Luke aren’t together but you both found someone who makes you happy and it’s funny but in a lot of ways, the people you chose are a lot like the two of you.” There were differences of course but Jaina could see some of Mara’s traits in Carol and some of Luke’s in Nick (what little time she’d known him...about six or eight hours maybe?). “And also this has bugged me since yesterday. He was dead a long time ago but I’ve seen the movies and is it just me or does Nick look like Master Windu...only with an eye patch?” she laughed. “but yeah, I wanted to tell you because I know you don’t need anybody’s approval but still..” Mara considered for a moment. There was a close partnership that had grown into something more and it reminded her that with more people around - people who didn't know her and Nick that she would need to pull a higher standard of professionalism than she had required from herself the past year. Even around Sitwell or Romanoff, or the few other SHIELD agents that they'd worked with and around, there had been the ability to be partners in both ways without it needing to be watched. But - now Nick was more or less alive again - and there were other things to think about. "I've always liked Carol," she said finally. "I don't know her well, but she's got a good sense about her, and we worked together briefly -- Normally I would say your Uncle has had questionable taste," she offered a quick grin to Jaina. "But it seems he may have finally grown past that point in all realities. Regardless, I would appreciate your discretion Jaina. There is no sense lying to you regarding something we both know you are intelligent enough to put together. But we have not had time to speak of anything, and even if his being alive is public, there are other reasons for us not to be." She pushed a strand of hair behind her ear and checked over the data on the tablet. "I'd not really thought about it, but I think you're a bit right about Master Windu. Now I'm going to have to re-watch at least part of that film." “You should, it’s pretty amazing,” Jaina said. “I’ve read enough to know that Uncle Luke kind of picked some real winners but he did finally get it right with you. And he did here too, I think. I just know he’s happy and that’s all I want for both of you.” it was a simple sentiment but it was true. Jaina loved both her uncle and her aunt, and while the situation here might not be one that she completely understood, they were both happy and that was all that mattered. “Don’t worry. I won’t say anything. You might not remember this but you gave a bunch of reading material about SHIELD and HYDRA when I first joined, sort of background that I wasn’t likely to get in training so I understand. He’s taking a big chance by coming forward, I respect that and I can support that because he wants to keep people safe. And I will do whatever it takes to keep my family safe and that includes you and if keeping this secret to protect you both is what it takes then so be it.” "I trust you will, Jaina, although don't expect him to show up at family holidays anytime soon," Mara offered a smile to her niece. The truth was everything was happening so quickly - it was going to take some working through on the other side. The most important thing, she supposed, was that they made certain the world lasted long enough for them to have time on the other side to figure all of it out. "In the meantime -" she looked down at the tablet in her hand. "We've got some other inventories to check out and we should get that done. Do you want to work one side of the hall while I work the other side and we meet at the end?" “At this point, I’m not even sure I want to show up at family holidays,” Jaina laughed. “With Dad coming and going, Mom gone, you never know who might show up or how old they’ll be. I’m just glad that at least you, Uncle Luke, and Anakin are still you. And Lando, he kind of counts too.” She blew out a breath and looked around. “Yeah, I can do that. It’ll go faster if we split up anyway. Which side do you want?” Mara couldn't help a small laugh at Jaina's comment. There was some truth to it and it was perhaps what was behind part of what she had determined to do to stay as long as she had where she had and with whom. Family from home would always be family, but they might be different, and depending on how quickly they came and they went, it could be exhausting trying to rebuild relationships from a different point - and sometimes they stuck around… Luke had - but she couldn't regret the choice she'd made to stay with Nick. It had been a good choice. "This place likes to keep us hopping," Mara smirked. "But right now you're still, sort of, my apprentice, and I saw we need to get hopping. You take the left, I'll take the right, and then we'll go check out and see how many small aircraft we've got and what the condition of them are. I know that won't interest you at all…" Mara offered a quick grin and disappeared into the first door on the right. There was a world to save after all. |
