Pietro was oddly silent since Johannesburg. He had seen the destruction the Hulk monster had wrought in the city when he fought with Stark. True it hadn’t been his doing. And he tried to justify it. The Avengers were monsters. Hulk proved it. But a part of him couldn’t help but feel a bit guilty over what they had done. They had unleashed that terror and destruction on the city. On those innocents. Didn’t that make them the same as the Avengers they hated?
That day, Wanda had gone down into Sokovia and had watched again the footage of what had happened in Johannesburg. She had seen into the mind of the man and had knowingly unleashed the beast. All those people who had been hurt - it was all her fault, in the end. She knew this, and there was not a way for her to say it wasn’t so. The destruction had been a direct result of her own actions.
At the moment, she sat curled up against the wall, staring at nothing in particular. She felt dirty and ashamed - and she was wracked with guilt. This was what Ultron had wanted her to do, and yet...somehow it didn’t seem right. Any of it. Not when it resulted in the pain and suffering of so many who had never done her people any harm. Doubt lay heavy in her heart, and she was beginning to think that maybe they should reconsider their next actions.
Pietro picked up some food from the market for him and his sister on his way back to where they were staying. They were getting some rest before they would join Ultron. Wherever it was he was at currently. Slipping in, he moved over to Wanda and sat down. He pulled out some of the food he had gotten and began dividing it up for each of them. Even if he didn’t have an appetite he knew he needed to eat to keep his energy up. The look on his sister’s face though…
“What is it?”
When her brother returned, she barely looked at him. Instead, she turned her eyes to the floor, not seeming to notice the food, but she acknowledge the fact that he’d brought it. “I am not hungry,” she replied quietly. “I feel a little ill,” came a moment later, and she absently rubbed her fingers together. Even the thought of eating right now made her queasy.
He reached out and took her hands in his own. “We must keep our strength up,” he returned. But he made no further demands that she eat. He picked up a muffin he had gotten and started nibbling on it before he made a face and put it to the side. “Do you think...we should have left the monster alone?” he asked, his voice barely audible but he knew his twin would hear it. After all, they hadn’t wanted innocents to suffer, just the Avengers.
She nodded in response to his words about their strength, but subsided into silence. Still ignoring the food, she shifted a little and turned towards him a little more, but she didn’t lean against him like she normally did. She felt unworthy of comfort right now. When he asked his question, Wanda shut her eyes briefly, swallowing hard.
“...Perhaps,” she said in a faint whisper. Who knew what Ultron had left that might possibly pick up their words otherwise? “I did not expect that to happen. I did not know what to expect - but never that.”
He nodded in agreement. “I remember the stories from the news about what happened in New York years ago. But to see it…” To help be the cause of it… He looked at Wanda. “Do you think there is more to what his plan is than to just ending the Avengers?” It was a question that had been gnawing at him for a while. After all, all they had to do was just let Ultron build as many as he could and just overrun the Avengers. This, what they had done in South Africa, Pietro had never wanted that. He knew Wanda had never wanted that.
“I wish I knew - but he is all metal. No heart - so I cannot see his mind,” she replied quietly, frowning. She had thought that Ultron was going to destroy the Avengers there, on the ship, but he had not. His plans were yet hidden from her.
“For now, we will stay with him - and see what happens. What he is planning.” And if the opportunity came, then they would make up for what had happened in Africa. It was highly possible that the closer they stayed to Ultron, the more of an opportunity they would have to stop him themselves, if he became too dangerous. Sounds reached her ears - metal on metal - and she sat up slightly. “He is returning.” Reaching down, she picked up one of the apples Pietro had gotten and handed him the other. “As you said - we must keep up our strength,” she said to him, though her eyes warned him that they must not draw any suspicion down upon themselves.
Pietro took the apple and picked the muffin up, finishing the latter quickly before he rose to his feet. He held his hand out to Wanda to help her get up. “Hopefully this will be over soon,” he murmured. He knew his words would most likely be construed to anyone listening as to their plans with helping Ultron.
She nodded as she slipped her hand into his, scooping the muffin on her way and tossing the apple core aside. “And then our parents and our people shall be at peace,” Wanda said, squeezing his hand to comfort herself as well. “Let us go and see what he has next for us.”
