Who: Wanda Maximoff with a brief cameo by Pietro Maximoff and mentions of Steve Rogers, von Strucker, HYDRA agents, and Tony Stark
When: July 15, during the Avengers Invasion and during Tony’s vision
Where: von Strucker’s castle
Rating: Fairly low unless you click the link for Tony’s vision
Something was stirring, though they weren’t being told what it was - not yet. They ran past her room - soldiers like ants marching all in a row - their fear and excitement almost tangible in the air. Standing, Wanda straightened the long black dress she wore, then slipped out of the room to follow after the men. On reaching their main base of operations, she stepped to the side automatically as she always did, picking up on snatches of conversations and words here and there - and then alarms began to sound. Reaching out to the side, her hand was almost immediately touched by her brother’s. Normally, this would have calmed her, but today she was too excited, as she began to realize just what was happening. No more experiments, no more games - this was what they had been made for.
"Do you think it is another drill?" Pietro asked softly. He couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't though. But time would tell. No matter what came though, he was ready for what was to come.
“No. This - this is something different,” she murmured, eyeing von Strucker as he discussed just what to do, just as the men closer to her started exclaiming about the Avengers attacking. Avengers meant Stark. Taking a step closer to her brother, she met Pietro’s eyes and arched a single brow. Since they were young, the two had often been able to communicate with few words, each instinctively knowing what the other wanted to do. She could see now in his eyes that he, too, was eager to be of use, to do something to stop these “Avengers”. The Maximoffs had something of their own to avenge. Before further attention could be paid to them, she had given a simple nod to Pietro, and he scooped her up and raced off with her before they could be stopped.
Seconds later, he set her down deeper in the castle, then made his own way to the exit to see what he could do outside. Wanda settled in to wait, content to be patient for now.
It didn’t take long. The first one she dealt with was fairly simple and didn’t require much at all. She stood out of the line of sight as von Strucker gave himself up, then moved in to confront the pathetic Captain America herself - but he wasn’t her true target. Brushing him aside was child’s play, and allowed her to move down deeper into the depths of the castle, following after Tony Stark himself. Once there, she moved in silently, her footsteps making no sound louder than a faint whisper against the hard flooring. He was distracted, she could tell, and would have been simple to deal with here and now, where no one would know - yet after a moment, she realized she was far more interested in his own fascination with the item before him.
Lifting her hand, she sent out a tiny burst of mind-altering energy, designed to draw out his deepest fears and force him to see exactly what he didn’t want to see. Another inch closer and she was caught up in vision with him, able to see the death and destruction that he feared he would bring to those he loved and cared for. This, then, was perfect. Allowing him to cause his own suffering, as he had caused the suffering of Pietro and herself - and so many others - was by far a better punishment than anything she could wrought. As the vision drew to a close and he shook off the after-effects, Wanda smile and drew back to her brother’s side, shaking her head at his question. This was perfect.
Tony Stark would prove to be his own undoing. Pietro picked her up again and sped off before he could turn and see the twins, and moments later they were a mile away from the castle, near one edge of the city. As she was set down, Wanda’s eyes gazed at the smoke in the distance that came from Sokovia. Because of the Avengers, more of her people had likely died this day. Like Stark, they too would pay.
