Ginny was at a table near the windows, browsing through her phone. She had a few course catalogs from the local community college on the table and a list of courses with the Educational Services Division, all of which were very important to deciding her future. She'd even managed to circle a few potential options: composition, basic maths, maybe a science. She didn't know anything about Muggle university, however, which had led her to looking up on the internet. And now, somewhat fascinatedly, she was watching a series of YouTube videos on Muggle Quidditch. That Quidditch couldn't, didn't, wouldn't be possible in this universe was a certainty to her. And yet, here were a bunch of Muggles running around, carrying broomsticks, looking for all the world like they knew what they were doing. She touched another link on her phone, completely oblivious to the rest of the coffeeshop around her. -- The coffee shop was unfortunately getting crowded as Davina headed in to get herself something to drink between a couple of her classes here. Classes here were weird (seriously, who got to take Alchemy and sword combat as classes), they weren’t like normal high school and really Davina was just happy to be able to manage making it to 95% of her classes, of course when pretty much every single person no matter what they were started to get sick that kind of hit the pause button on making it to most of her classes. After getting her drink she glanced around with a pretty big sigh. She didn’t really know anyone that was in there and most of the tables seemed to have two or more people at them, or frankly they were people that she didn’t really think would be a good idea to bother. Her eyes caught a red-head that at least looked closer to her age than the guy in his 50s sitting alone, but who knew, she could be a vampire and be 1000 years old or something. As Davina made her way over holding her cup of iced tea in her right hand she paused as she got to the table. “Hey, would you mind sharing? This place is packed today.” She said with a friendly smile. ~~~ Ginny looked up from her phone, surprised to see the other girl standing there. "Hey." She'd been pretty caught up in her "research" that she hadn't really noticed how crowded the café was, but once she took all of that information in, she hurriedly started to move aside her course pamphlets. "Not at all. She offered the other girl a quick smile. "Maybe it'll motivate me to do some actual work." She indicated her phone as if no further explanation was necessary. "I just discovered this world's version of Quidditch…It's brilliant how they compensate for the lack of magic by running around." She spoke with appreciation in her voice, appreciation and general curiosity for how things worked in this world. She might have found her father's fascination with plugs and electricity a little bit weird (and annoying), but right now, she thought she may as well make the best of living like a Muggle. And that meant respecting how things were done here. She looked over at her course lists and then back at the girl, smiling again. "Which I suppose would be brilliant if they'd made a profession out of it, but it's not, and so that's most likely a dead end as far as a job. I'm Ginny Weasley, by the way. Recent arrival. Witch. Famous for being in a series of books I've never read." It was the sort of casual introduction she'd learned to make in this world, a world where she both existed and didn't. -- “So, you’re from the Harry Potter world.” Davina said as she put her bag down on the floor and heard about the this worlds Quidditch comment, before she said her name. Davina didn’t know a huge amount about the Harry Potter books/movies/world but she knew enough. She could remember a time when talking about that kind of stuff was easy and so easy, the ins and outs of what people thought were magic… However now it was clear being here that everything was different and the different kinds of magic were fascinating to Davina. Smiling, Davina actually giggled, she hadn’t felt like she’d actually giggled like a seventeen year old was supposed to in so long. “Thanks for letting me steal part of your table.” She said before catching sight of what Ginny had been looking at. “I’m Davina, also a witch, but a really different kind from what I can tell…. And from a TV Show that I’ve actually watched.” She admitted and very quickly started to want to curse herself for saying too much. “So, you’re looking at some classes to help get more intune with this world?” She asked trying to change the subject from witchcraft. As completely curious as she was, Davina still wasn’t totally comfortable talking about her brand of magic with just anyone. ~~ "That'd be the one." She was still fairly surprised that people had heard of her books, as she now thought of them. Even though, it made sense. If Muggle universities had imaginary Quidditch teams, the Harry Potter books were probably really famous. She hadn't really looked into it too much, but she thought there might be films and an amusement park. Maybe. She didn't know what part of Harry's life really screamed amusement park, but there you were. "You're a witch, too?" She wanted to know what sort of witch and maybe compare notes, but the next line of questioning diverted her thoughts. "I'm thinking about a course of study at Muggle university. Since I've got to get a job, and I don't really have the qualifications otherwise." She laughed quietly. "I don't know how far potions and Defence will get me in the Muggle, er -- I mean, New York City. What about you?" Maybe a fellow witch had some ideas as to how to work magic into her future career. ~~ It was really easy to just nod to Ginny’s comment and not say much else, which might be really stupid given that anyone could google who she was and bam here is all the information you could possibly want on her! It was still just weird, it had taken time to trust Kol, and even with that sometimes she wasn’t 100% sure she should, even though she of course did. “Have you looked into the ESD stuff that they have here? There are a lot of classes that kind of go between worlds I guess. Like there is a magical Defence class, and things like alchemy and normal stuff too like Algebra, but it might be something to look into, to you know, get used to this world and then start with University classes in the summer?” Davina offered as a suggestion. “Because I bet you know a lot more of the stuff, it might just have been called something else, or the way you used it was different, like potions and chemistry. Clearly one has magic in it, but the other you use some similar skills too.” Davina offered. “I’m taking classes with the ESD right now, and maybe trying to work with Regina and her magic school.” ~~~ "That's pretty great." Ginny was polite enough not to inquire further. If Davina wanted to be quiet about her own life as a witch, that was fine with her. It was just enough to have a fellow magic user on her side, swapping stories about what their future might be. That was, at least, how Ginny was starting to see this entire conversation. When Davina started to list the available ESD classes, Ginny brightened considerably. Magical defence? Alchemy? All of those seemed right within her standard Hogwarts curriculum. She searched through her pamphlets and brochures, trying to find the information she'd gathered about the ESD. "Oh, yea. Maybe I could take introduction to the modern world. I need to learn how to use a microwave." She looked at Davina, and then laughed. "Well, I guess I could just magically prepare all my food, but that's not really in spirit with this entire… thing." Besides, if she learned how to use a microwave, her dad would thank her. He was obsessed with all sorts of Muggle things. "There's a magic school here? Like, Hogwarts?" ~~~ Laughing, Davina smiled. “I can teach you how to use a microwave, that one is pretty easy actually. But I think it might be good to just learn more about the world in general too you know.” Davina said trying to be helpful. “I mean there are other things to learn for food, like the coffee machines can be kind of testy, and toasters are much more fancy than I thought they would be.” She said smiling. “It’s not really like Hogwarts, it’s just something that Regina does, she posted about it I guess a week or so ago now about having spots open. She has a whole Magical school thing where it’s more like learning some basics and going from there, but she said she will work to specialize it for the type of student. I don’t think my magic is like her magic, just like yours is probably really different too, but we all have magic and it might be kind of good to learn more about it.” Davina said as she looked down at her phone to pull up the link that Regina had posted. “Here.” She said handing her phone over to Ginny. “I can text you the link too, but just so you get a better idea too.” ~~~ As Davina talked about the different Muggle machines, Ginny desperately wished she'd paid attention to her father's mad gadgets. It might have made this entire transition that much easier. As it were, however, she'd always been too busy chattering on about her brothers' latest exploits, or flying her toy broomstick through the garden. There just wasn't time for electricity or plugs or, Merlin forbid, toasters. Well, to be fair, the Burrow did have a magical toaster, and it worked pretty well. "We have an electric kettle that I've charmed to sing instead of whistle. It's pretty convenient. But I keep burning my eggs, even though the dial on the microwave says three minutes..." She didn't understand it. As she took Davina's phone to look at the magic school, she thought back to her own time at Hogwarts. Davina was probably right. Nothing here could match up with that experience. "I get it. We have this magic in my world, but we just call it different names…Rather than teleporting, we call it apparating, for example." She handed Davina back her phone. "You should text it to me. I'd help out, if I'm able. I've never been much of a teacher before." -- “Hopefully in key, because anything off key would be worse.” Davina said feeling a sense of needing to be protective of music in general. It was stupid and it was unfair but she still felt it. She still felt the desire to protect music, as stupid and as selfish as it was, it was a grounding point for her. “I don’t think Regina is looking for people to teach, but more for her to teach.” Davina said as she sat back a little bit taking her phone. “I just think that we are all in this whole new world of superhero land and we might as well see what everyone else knows magic wise and learn as much as possible. She said as she looked at her phone. “What’s your number?” She asked. “I’ll text it to you right now.” ~~ The notion of a superhero land, a rather apt description of where they were now, made her smile. "That does make sense," she said. She listed off her phone number, and then added, "So, it's a bit like Dumbledore's Army, where we all try to learn from each other… But Harry's -- or in this case, Regina's -- really the teacher." As she received the text from Davina, she noticed the time on her phone. It was well-past the time that she'd expected to be at the café, which was in part due to her phone being a total distraction and in part due to her meeting Davina. "Is it half-past three already?" She started to sweep up her collection of papers and pamphlets, stuffing them into her bag. "I hate to dash out on you, but I've got to water a few of my friends' plants -- and figure how to get onto one of these Quidditch teams." She tossed her red hair back over her shoulder as she stood. "It was such a pleasure to talk to you. And I'll text you if I have any questions about magic school, alright?" |
