Sometimes, being a part of an Avengers team with people who had legitimate super powers tested Laurie a little bit. It wasn't that she thought she wasn't good enough, or couldn't keep up. It was that she felt she was under utilized. That she was too often expected to be tied up in the role of civilian support or 'waiting for the ambulances to arrive' because she couldn't websling, she couldn't fly. It didn't seem to matter that she'd been training since she was in junior high, or that her parents were both notorious (for better or worse) back home with their history of being vigilantes, it didn't matter that she had decades of experience dealing with the worst that a dysfunctional, Nixon-run New York city had to offer, with it's vicious and violent gangs and it's civil unrest. I didn't seem to matter that she'd witnessed the merciless death of millions of innocent people in the search for global peace, and wasn't allowed to speak up about it. And it was frustrating; it was limiting, and it made her resentful. Not of her team, necessarily, but of the fact she wasn't being given the opportunity to do the best that she could. She wondered, often, if maybe SHIELD would be a better fit for her. But she wasn't sure, and she didn't know how much Howard would like the idea, given how torn up he still was about the fact that SHIELD had turned into a cover for HYDRA operations and had all but completely self-destructed not that long ago. But she was bringing that fury with her to the gym tonight. She was absolutely ready for whatever Goku had in store for her, as far as training was concerned, and she wasn't about to hold back. He'd made every indication that he could take whatever was thrown at him, and that was a theory she was ready to test. |
