Yeah, I was thinking more along the lines of the second one. Protecting their country, their fellow citizens, and so on. Lacking some self-preservation is relatively normal for people in dangerous jobs, but there's usually something that they worry about... and want to preserve. Something to make it worth the risk.
But to your first point, I'm not sure there'd be any thrill involved if you couldn't feel fear, either.
