As she began to explain just how long she'd been held captive, Steve closed his eyes tightly for a moment and held her closer, struggling to find the right thing to say. He couldn't relate - didn't want to, and wished she hadn't gone through it either - but he knew a little bit about what it was like to feel helpless and to come home a different person than before. Everything he'd seen and been through had changed him. He could see marked changes in Bucky after what he'd been through, and Tony wasn't the same man he'd first met either. Adjusting to life again after twenty years of captivity wouldn't be an easy thing to face, that much he knew.
When she looked up at him, he leaned in and kissed her forehead gently. Twenty years was a long time, and in Zola's custody... he shuddered. Sharon didn't deserve that.
"That's a long time," he murmured. "I'm glad you're here instead of there." Even though he knew it didn't take away the pain from the memories, there was some consolation in knowing that she was here with him instead of dealing with the aftermath in her world.
