Few people knew about this apartment -- for good reason, after the mess with HYDRA and SHIELD and his apartment in Potts Tower being shot at -- so it had become a refuge for Steve. There weren't old memories hanging over his head here, or a teenage boy down the hall. He loved James, of course, and he always enjoyed Sam's company, but there were some things -- seeing Sharon, for one -- that needed their own space.
He hadn't realized when he'd called Tony to tell him that he was going to stay in New York that it would turn out to be a good idea, but when Sharon had asked to see him, he was glad he hadn't run away to Vegas again. He needed to start facing what life threw at him, instead of trying to escape how he felt. Las Vegas and Tony Stark wouldn't always be there for him. This, Peggy's appearance in his life again, and all of the memories that stirred up, wasn't something he could ignore. It was something he had to look at directly, something he had to stare down. Only then could he take a breath and keep moving forward.
After peering through the peephole, he opened the door. Sharon looked... well, she looked like she needed more than just that beer she was drinking on his doorstep. Steve's brow furrowed slightly with concern. Apparently the universe had been telling him that he was needed in New York for more reasons than he knew. "You saving any of those for me?" he asked, hoping the break the ice a little, and he prayed that she didn't rebuff his poor attempt at a joke. Instead of stepping aside for her right away, he stepped towards her and leaned in to kiss her cheek lightly. Whatever was going on in that head of hers, he'd be there for her, just like she'd been there for him. "Come on, it's warmer inside than it is out here in the hallway."
