This girl was very friendly and very polite. Bilbo had to admit that humans here were nothing like the riders of Rohan or the men of Gondor. He hadn't met too many of them, but she almost reminded him of the kind-hearted folk of Lake Town, especially after they'd defeated the dragon Smaug. She would certainly fit in there.
"Eighteen to buy tobacco? Well, that's the strangest thing I've ever heard. Granted, we in the Shire come of age in our thirties, so I imagine it's similar to that." He caught her excitement at the name of Gandalf. Surely even Bilbo himself had been excited when Gandalf came around. He offered a smile. "Indeed. That was how my ventures began, after all. Gandalf showed up unexpectedly, rather...the dwarves showed up even more so unexpectedly, begging my assistance to even out their unlucky thirteen numbered company and to be their burglar. I suppose hobbits do make for good burglars. We are certainly small enough."
He stretched out his feet, still bare despite the cold. Hobbits tended to favor walking without shoes, as it was freer and more natural. Plus, in the grassy hills of the Shire, shoes were not needed to walk.
