I'm almost surprised he talked to you about it. You know? I thought more likely you than anybody else, so I had to try. But he was always so closed off. You know? He never talked to my mom about what was going on with him. He certainly never talked to me. Not about any of this stuff. Or anything, really, except how my easy life had made me soft, and I needed to man up. (Which was right around the time they sent me to boarding school, so I couldn't have been more than six.)
The only person he ever told that he was proud of me was my brother. He certainly never said it to me. Hell, for all I know, he never said it all. Maybe Arno just knew how he was, and wanted to make me... feel better about all of it. Little white lies. It was nice of him, really. I guess maybe now, it's nice of you.
