"I think they've dealt with a lot of crises just fine without us," Sam said, with a slight smile. "I don't even know what I'd do about a flash of light, anyway. And I'm not ready to go back yet, so let's not."
He wasn't, at all. The pink of the room wasn't precisely what he might have picked, but he did approve of the name, and he truthfully wasn't one to care all that much about wallpaper or decor anyway. He cared more about the company he was keeping, and this place was uniquely different enough from New York and also from his not-so-amazing memories of California that he couldn't associate it with anything other than Veronica. In that respect, it was perfect.
It all disappeared, anyway, when she kissed him. He closed his eyes and returned the kiss, letting go of the worry about the light and about Cas, about his brother. I don't care if the world is falling apart as long as I'm with you. It was an accurate way of describing the way he felt, too, except that it left out his desperate and stubborn hope to not let the world fall apart, because he wasn't done enjoying everything that it had to offer.
That said, if the world was on the verge of falling apart, it was just one more reason for him to go ahead with the plan, because there might not be much time left. Now it was a flash of light, tomorrow it might be something he actually did need to deal with.
Actually going through it was a different story, though. After the kiss ended, he found himself looking down at her, and he just couldn't speak. It was possibly the most terrifying moment of his life, not just because of the nerves he supposed most people would get at a moment like this, but because it was so deeply ingrained into him that something good-- someone he loved-- would disappear from his life in the most horrific way possible, right at the moment he was most hopeful. An awful combination of fear and hope and affection twisted around inside him, preventing any words from coming out of his mouth.
But after a moment, he got a grip on himself enough to say, "Once the world starts falling apart, it just seems to keep doing it," he said. "That might be our problem tomorrow, but it's someone else's problem today. And even when it is our problem, I want to be fighting through it with you. Because the world was already worth fighting for, for everyone else, and it's worth fighting for for me when you're in it."
It wasn't exactly the lead-up to this that he'd planned, but it was fitting all the same. He bent down for another light kiss to banish the last of his fears, took a deep breath, and smiled at her. "I have something for you, cricket."
