Veronica stared up at the sky, brow furrowed. And things had been going so well. She and Sam had finally gotten away, and thanks to the Doctor, had the quirky Madonna Inn as a weekend get away. She loved every kooky inch of the bright pink hotel, especially their room, which she picked for it's name-Short and Tall, just like them. They'd had a great first day, with couples massage, lounging by the pool, and dinner in the funky little cafe, but of course, nothing could be perfect in their world.
The flash of light was just one more reminder that nothing was normal. Veronica tried not to think about it, and instead closed her eyes and breathed in the beautiful central coast smell that was all over near her hotel. It was covered in flowers and nature and up on a hill, and it was more wide open spaces than Veronica had seen in over a year. She loved California, and missed it greatly. Tomorrow they should go to the beach, she thought, assumuing the world wasn't ending now.
Just then Sam stepped back on the balcony, wrapping his arms around her. She held his hands and cuddled against him, loving how she fit just right with him. "Well, I guess they can deal with one little crisis without us, right? We don't need to be back now, do we?" she asked, a note of hope in her voice. She turned and wrapped her arms around her neck and pulled him down for a lingering kiss. "I'm just in a place where I don't care if the world is falling apart so long as I'm with you."
