Steve hesitated a moment, trying to remember what exactly he was supposed to be doing. He'd been speechless ever since she announced that they were here pretending to be a married couple -- she could have warned him! -- and he hadn't recovered yet. It reminded him of when Natasha had told the clerk at the Apple Store that they were engaged. He had barely been able to keep up then. The second time should have been easier, but this was Sharon, and it was a fake marriage.
This spy stuff had to be complicated, didn't it? All he wanted to do was hunt HYDRA and bring his best friend home. At least the former would distract him from the latter for a time being; that was why he'd tagged along with Sharon. That was why he'd gone out that night with Natasha, too. There was still work to be done. Distraction was dangerous.
He shook his head, and attempted to shake the shocked expression from his face. "It's fine. I just hope I remember that --" He paused again. There might not be microphones hidden in the elevator, but there was probably a camera. He remembered what Natasha told him on the escalator in the mall, and dropped his shoulder bag onto the floor beside a suitcase. "That you're my wife." He stepped up to her and put his hands on her waist. What had he just told himself, that distraction was dangerous? "How convincing do you want to be?"
