By comparison to Veronica's, Sam's sentiments were much calmer and more optimistic. Cautiously so, because his optimism was tempered by the obvious turmoil she was going through, and he couldn't not feel her pain. Not that he would have tuned it out, even if he could have. At the entrance of the tower, he took her hand and held it tightly, brushing his fingertips reassuringly over her knuckles.
He had met Lilly before, but he hadn't been around for this conversation. Then again, this conversation had gone differently before anyway, with Veronica needing to be the one to deliver the news of her best friend's murder. He remembered that much of it, because she'd told him about it afterward. Or maybe before, it was long enough ago that the finer details had gotten blurred. But he remembered Lilly, her cheery attitude and refusal to take her death seriously-- which wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but it probably made it harder on Veronica. Given the fact that she'd described it as 'kind of a bummer' on the network, he was expecting more of the same. At least maybe with him there, Veronica would have someone that was on her level, reacting as emotionally as she was, not making her feel like even more of a mess by comparison. At least, when he was upset, he found it hard to talk to cheerier people for that reason.
He squeezed her hand again as they waited, and lifted it briefly to his mouth to press a kiss to her knuckles. "You can do this, cricket," he said softly. "Whatever you need from me, I'm here. And if you want a moment alone with her, just tell me and I'll come back out and wait right here."
