Hicks didn't know precisely what had happened to Newt, only that she was dead. He'd overheard a couple of the Wey-Yu people talking about her after they'd debriefed everyone on Fury 161. 'The little girl's dead and the android unsalvagable' had been what they'd said.
"Yeah... yeah," he said softly then he grabbed the pack of cigarettes and held it out to her. The lighter was tucked inside the pack. "Sure. Lot of places are real anti-smoking here. Just... you know... warning."
He looked over at her. "We got intercepted by a Wey-Yu ship, the Sephora, but a couple of colonists they'd picked up got to us first. They woke me up but before they could do much more than start telling me what the hell was going on, the Wey-Yu commandos got there and everything went to hell."
He paused and took a long drink, his gaze dropping to the glass in his hand. "There was..." He drew in a breath and let it out slowly. "There was a facehugger on you." The despair and anger and helplessness he'd felt at that moment came back to him. He clenched his jaw for a moment then kept going. "The commandos were shooting and one of them must have hit the facehugger. There was an acid spill that caused an electrical fire. The Sulaco's systems went into automatic and pushed the cryotubes into the EEV. One of the colonists... Turk... had fallen into mine. The EEV was ejected and ended up on Fiorina 161. Fury 161."
