I got back late last night from a meeting with my editor and her immediate supervisors. They want me to break my article up into several small articles to be published monthly starting in July and featuring a few different refugees each month. And by featuring, I actually mean take their biography from Wikipedia, and publish it with a photograph that they've bought the rights for that may or may not be an actual picture of the refugee, say that they're a refugee, and leave it at that. Published under my byline.
I hope you see the problems that I have with this, and I really hope you share them, as this goes against the very nature of the job I willingly undertook and brought to Pepper and have presented to the refugees. There will be nothing about how the refugees themselves are coping with their new surroundings, how they are helping this community and this city. Only a blurb about the character they are in their book, television show, and whether they're what the Rising Tide calls a threat to this world.
I would like to discuss any sort of option with you, including the one where I don't talk to anyone and distance myself from this farce.
Unfortunately, I need to indefinitely postpone our discussion. I've had the rules changed on me concerning this assignment, which is about as much fun as you think it is. I'm really sorry about this, I really was looking forward to visiting Fangtasia and meeting you.
Of course, if you still want to give me a grand tour, I'm happy to. It would be completely off the record.
