"Yes?" 25,000 feet away from where she was supposed to be, Hill couldn't pretend like she'd ever intended to follow orders, so she didn't bother to hide her contempt. Since the day Peggy put two and two together for her, since she'd whispered that word - Hydra - in a warm bookstore, a lurking nausea had lived in her ribs, worming deeper and more painful by the day. She could ignore it when it was just an illustration on a book page, a what if, a maybe -- but having the evidence in front of her after the WSC's order to destroy Hydra Island… well. Fury was right about keeping her in the dark. A few days were all it took for the anger to come bubbling out. "Director Hill." The voice from a shadow on screen blared angrily in its eerie calm. "When we gave you 48 hours to comply with World Security Council mandates, we did not mean defy the single command you had adhered to. Please explain the recent reallocation of funds from Project PEGASUS to SHIELD Operations." "And while you are at it," Another voice, grating, overly familiar, and feminine behind the distortion took over. "You have 27 hours to produce Nicholas Fury and the Tesseract. Is your plan with the Helicarrier to see their house from here?" To one: "I actually complied with most of them." Her shoulders lifted simply, a vague implication of her disinterest in their opinion. HYDRA. Arguing and complying seemed equally pointless. Why even talk to these mouths when there were so many others lurking in the shadows? To the other: "The helicarrier provides a certain perspective." "Yes, it certainly did to Agent Fury." If anything, some of them seemed as bored as she was with the threats. But the deep voiced man on the leftmost monitor drawled on. "You should know we've taken precautions since. It will not provide escape should you fail to deliv--." "How do you feel you have complied since our talk Wednesday?" Another voice, paternal and vaguely familiar interrupted the threat. Well there it was -- but it wasn't the lazy exchange of threats that made Hill's neck hairs stand at attention; the last voice rustled something like a memory in her, and whatever it was did not belong in the same part of her brain as HYDRA. Excuses died on her lips; the voice was paternal, yes, but paternal did not make Hill want to help or to please. It made her want to fight. "I think we can drop this charade. I'm pretty sick of it. I'm sure you are too." If only raised eyebrows made an audible sound, these faceless shadows of men and women might have made some response. A wiry male silhouette cleared his throat but the older male spoke. "Director Hill. The World Security Council is relieving you of duty. Correct your course to the coordinates we are sending immediately, where its agents will meet you. There you may surrender your badge and sidearm, and yourself into custody." "You have 24 hours to comply." The transmission cut out. "You can pry Betsy out of my cold dead hands," Hill said to a blank screen. She had no illusions that they'd be coming soon to do exactly that. |
