Martha found that she was enjoying her time here quite a lot, though she wished her son would hurry up and get back from his tour she was just grateful that they had managed to talk since she had arrived. She had loved seeing the wedding of her son and Kate, though it made her sad that she had missed the actual thing and throwing this party was growing more and more likely in her opinion. If she could have gotten away with it she would have made the marry again but there were limits to even what she would do so she had settled to watch the video of the ceremony. While it was a small affair it was it was lovely and Martha was glad to witness it even if she hadn’t been able to attend it. Making her way to the coffee shop where she and Lorelai had planned to meet, she was looking forward to actually meeting her in person. She seemed like a lovely person and a friend of Kate’s was a friend of hers. Plus they had very important things to discuss, at least in her opinion. Not spotting the other woman, she grabbed herself a table, ordered herself a coffee and slice of carrot cake and waited for her to arrive. Lorelai was just getting back from Illinois, she had only been there a few days, and she was glad to be back. She had missed her kid. Lorelai had taken a plane, and she probably had a little bit of jet lag, but she was okay otherwise. She got her bags dropped off at the apartment, and then freshened up a little before she left again, so she could go and meet Martha. She was really wanting this party to be amazing, Kate and Castle deserved that. Not that she really knew him, they’d only spoken once. She was carrying a folder with some of her ideas. Lorelai didn’t want to disappoint, she’d been keeping a list during her free time while she’d been in Chicago. She’d had to check out some things at a Holiday Inn there. She liked traveling for the job, that could get to be a perk. Lorelai hadn’t gotten to do much traveling for the Independence Inn. She would have liked to. It would have been interesting. Although, she really liked Stars Hollow, and she missed it a lot. When she got to the coffee shop, she ordered a cappuccino and a chocolate chip muffin, and then found Martha at her table. “Hello, Martha.” Lorelai said, smiling as she joined her. She seemed like a nice person. If only her own mother was as nice. “Lorelai, it is wonderful to see you,” she raised greeting the other woman with a kiss on the cheek. “I do hope you weren’t too rushed coming here?” she asked concerned. While she was looking forward to organising the party, she didn’t want Lorelai to be too rushed, having just gotten back from a work trip. “The trip did go well though?” she asked taking a sip of her coffee though it was still slightly too hot to drink. If she had her way, Martha would have been organising another wedding for them but even she had limits to what she could get away with when it concerned her family. That wasn’t to say this party wasn’t going to be done to the best of her ability and she had a feeling that the younger woman agreed with her. The wedding had been a wonderful affair from what she had seen and she was glad that she had the chance to watch the ceremony though she hadn’t been there in person. Most of all though, she was glad that Kate and Rick finally admitted that they loved each other after it had been so obvious for so long. “I wasn’t, don’t worry. I got a long nap on the plane.” Lorelai said. “I was so tired as soon as I got on and it was almost instantly I fell asleep.” Lorelai sipped her coffee. The older woman was nice, and she was a bit jealous of Kate, although, Luke’s parents weren’t alive so she wouldn’t have in laws if that ever happened. Of course, that would require him being brought here. She was hoping that he would, she missed him a lot. Sookie too, if she was being honest. She didn’t really miss her parents, not really. There was no more obligation for Friday Night Dinner. “How are you, Martha? Been settling into the city well?” She asked, smiling as she took a bite of her muffin. She was made of sugar, it seemed to be. She just hoped Rory was okay, she hadn’t been home when she’d dropped off her luggage. “I’m glad to hear that,” Martha said with a smile. “There is absolutely nothing worse than being jet lagged in my opinion,” she said with a shake of her head. Okay, there was but that was completely beside the point at the moment and it was up there either way. “I’m well enough and yes I’m settling in more than fine - it is wonderful having the family here and with only a few years difference the city is much the same as I remember for which I am grateful. I’ve heard there’s people here from completely different worlds and times which would be horrible to adjust too,” she said with a shake of her head. Lorelai said, “Well, that was me, it was 2001 where I was.” She hadn’t taken long to get up to speed, she was still working on catching up on her shows, and there were some new ones that she’d gotten into, but she was mostly adjusted to the fact that it was now 2014. She was so amazed that there were so many changes for some people. This Tesseract thing was really a piece of work. She wasn’t sure she really understood it, but she was sure Rory could explain it to her if she really wanted to. “I’m glad you’re settling in.” Martha had been there less time than she had, it was already going on two months for her. This place was a lot of wonder, there were so many superheroes, it was just insane to her. She was half hoping Wonder Woman would show up, that would be really cool. Wonder Woman had always been her favorite. Lorelai sipped her coffee. “What do you think of the place so far?” “Ouch! Though I think I saw or heard of someone from the 1800s so could be worse,” Martha said with a grimace. She really couldn’t imagine that, it would just be horrible. “You’ve adjusted well yourself?” she asked interested. Yes it wasn’t that big a difference but the differences were still obvious from what she could remember of the differences. “It is certainly interesting - I just wish I had come up with the idea for a play back home but still it is highly intriguing,” Martha replied. “Though I’m sure there is still a lot about this place that will come as a surprise for me though. I mean a lot can happen in three years and add in all the people with powers… Who knows what will happen,” she shrugged.6t Lorelai nodded. “Things could always be worse. And I’ll admit, it was miserable without Rory. She’s my daughter. But then she just showed up here… I’ll admit, I was really glad to see her.” She couldn’t convey how happy she’d been. Lorelai sipped her coffee and put the notebook she’d written things down in on the table. She tucked some of her black hair behind her ear. “I don’t do well with on my own, I’ve never really lived on my own. It gets lonely. She had a two bedroom so I moved in with her.” She knew how lucky she was to have family around, and Martha was, too. “I can’t even imagine what it must be like to have super powers… it’s so trippy that the ones we heard about all our lives are real.” “I know what you mean, I can’t even begin to imagine not having my family here, I’m just grateful they were already here. I’m glad to hear that your daughter is here now though,” she told her with a soft smile. “I know, it is so odd - it’s the stuff of fairytales and fiction not of real life,” she said with a shake of her head. “Though speaking of family do we want to get down to plotting this party?” she asked Lorelai. Lorelai grinned. “Yes ma’am.” She said, laughing as she pulled out her notebook. “I was thinking of venues, we should get somewhere that can hold a lot of people, in case the guest list is big.” She had briefly entertained the idea of the Plaza, but that might be a bit too fancy. “And do you think we need a band or a DJ?” Planning weddings and parties she was good at, she had used to do that a lot at the Independence Inn. Of course, she had had a much smaller place to do it at, it had been easier. “I was thinking a band, it’s always better to have a band.” “You are organized,” Martha said with a grin. She appreciated that and it did make things easier for the two of them in the long run. “Definitely a band,” she agreed. “Maybe something classical? You would know better than I do - do they have many friends here?” she asked curiously. “They would all have to be invited and co-workers too. I know Kate works for the police so depending on her department there might be quite a lot of them too,” she mused. Lorelai nodded as she made notes. “Yes.. I was the manager of the Independence Inn back home, and planning parties was a thing that I was in charge of. I’ve managed weddings too.” She was definitely into this, too. Lorelai thought that every woman should have a good party if you had such a low frills wedding. “I think there’s quite a bit of friends, yes, and there are numerous cops, so I imagine that Kate’s unit will probably be a bit large.” She sipped her coffee. “Classical is good, is that what Kate and Castle would want?” She asked curiously. “Then I’m glad I got you onboard with this. I’ve organized my own share of things but not for some time,” she admitted. “That sounds good and I do believe they would, yes.” Martha seriously prayed that was the case, the two of them had such different tastes in things though that it also seemed like a good compromise. “I’ll contact the Police and talk to them to see if we can get some exact numbers,” she suggested. “Perhaps you could talk to Alexis about how many of their friends from the Tower would be interested? What places were you thinking of for it?” “That was where I got jammed, I wasn’t sure what kind of place to get. Of course, I could probably hold it at work, we’ve got some beautiful rooms. I work at one of the Holiday Inns here in town. I could get it at a good discount, too.” Lorelai said, jotting down some of what Martha had said. “I can do that, I’ll get in touch with Alexis. I am sure that she’d have some good ideas.” She was sure that Alexis would know. “I guess we’ll have to really know how many people to expect before we really can plan the venue though.” “I understand that, a room there could work especially discounted. I mean money really isn’t that big of a matter in the long run as long as people enjoy it but it would be good nonetheless. How about we try and get those numbers then see about setting a date and then seeing what is available for then? If we can find one we like for that date of course,” Martha suggested? “Still in the mean time we could always look at what bands are around here - I have no idea if they would be the same as back home and even then I wasn’t up to date with who was who. Also decorations and the sort could be looked into too. Something simple but classy I think?” She nodded. “I think that if we had the right amount of people to fit the maximum occupancy we’d be good.” Lorelai was sure that she could work things out, they weren’t overbooked this time of year since it wasn’t a big time of year for traveling. “We’ve got some weekends free in a couple of weeks, the hotel’s not real overbooked this time of year since it’s not a big travel time.” She said, as she looked up from her notebook. “I’m not sure about the bands, but I can research. There are a lot of wedding bands around here. It’s just getting the right one.” “What about a theme? Do we want one? Or just go with classic colors?” “That’s true and I’m sure it would be easy enough to get the numbers we need,” Martha mused, thinking things through in her head. “How many would the room hold anyway?” she asked realising she wasn’t actually aware of that number. “That is good though, so we have a few options if things don’t work out with everything. That works and I’ll have a look into it too - I’m sure it won’t be that hard to come up with one between us. “Oh that is a good question. What do you think? The question then is what theme or colours it would be. Kate and Rick do have very different interests in a lot of ways so something general would be best if we did go the theme route. Colors are always effective though too… You are the expert here though,” she finally said. “Well, I think that we should go with something simple, cream and navy blue, with maybe a touch of red for a pop of color.” Lorelai said, as she finished her muffin. “And the room holds about 500 people, and there’s room for a band, there’s a small stage.” It was one of the hotel’s conference rooms. Lorelai was excited to do this for Kate. She didn’t know her well but she really trusted her, and she was glad that she had her to talk to. “What do you think?” She asked, before her face lit up. “We should go with a detective writer theme… not sure how that would go, but it would be so brilliant and fun.” “Oh! Perhaps something like half of them dress up as cops and the other half as victims?” Martha suggested. “One gender one and the other the other to make it simpler? Though that color scheme would definitely work but I think the theme is much better - totally them,” she grinned. She really liked that idea and there was a lot of potential too with it. Plus it would bring a good laugh, she was sure. “That room is definitely big enough,” she nodded. “Oh, that would be totally awesome.” Lorelai said, laughing. “I like that. And it’s going to be so much fun for the guests.” She said, she was already wondering what she would wear. “I think we should have the women dress as cops and the men dress as victims, I think it’ll be fun that way. Not to mention we won’t have the women as victims that way.” It was less degrading, and it was also supportive of women being cops, which sadly was still an issue for some people. She clapped her hands. “I could do table decorations, make them look like typewriters, we could decorate the room with police tape, the possibilities are endless.” “Yes!” Martha exclaimed with delight. “That is absolutely perfect,” she couldn’t help but grin. She was thinking much the same was Lorelai was, not that she was aware but Martha had always been a firm supporter in women’s rights, in doing what they wanted to do and not was expected of them. “So we’ll talk to Alexis about friends, find a band and see if either of those weekends work with you and the theme is certainly a brilliant one. Anything else we need to do? I can see about getting actual police tape if need be when I talk to the Department about numbers.” “Oh, that would be great!” Lorelai said, writing a note to remind herself to check out bands. That Google search engine thingie was awesome. “And when I get back to work I’ll make sure to double check which weekends are free and get with Alexis, so she can tell me what their schedule’s like. Oooh, and we can have little bags full of those tiny pencils on the tables… you know, instead of the almonds that people usually go with.” That was a stroke of pure genius, and she was proud of herself. This was going to be fun. “It sounds like a plan,” Martha nodded. “I’ll see what I can come up with and I’ll let you know,” she told Lorelai. Martha was ecstatic that their plan was all coming together like this. She was truly looking forward to seeing the finished result and hopefully it would go off without a hitch. Lorelai sipped her coffee, pleased at the plans. “I am sure Kate and Castle will get a kick out of it.” She actually couldn’t wait to see their faces when they saw everything. “As soon as I get back to the apartment I’ll research some wedding bands. Then we can talk in a few days.” “I can imagine they would,” Martha said finishing off her own coffee. “Sounds good,” she nodded setting down her empty cup. “Well I must be off but it was wonderful talking to you and I’ll talk to you in a few days then,” Martha said finishing her cake off and raising from the table. With a nod and a smile, she made her way from the coffee shop a plan forming in her mind, one that she was determined to see succeed. |
