He took a deep breath. "The news from here is a little better. Mom's been here, yeah... she was young, from before Dean and I were born. You were here, too, from around that same time. Then you left and came back older, and then you both left. She hasn't come back, but she might." He really hoped so; his mother's disappearance had possibly been the hardest to take of all, because it was so new, so fresh. He'd only just met her, known her for a few months, and then she'd disappeared. "Dean's gone and come back a few times, too. Me and Jo are the only ones that haven't gone back yet... well, of the people you know, anyway."
There was also Charlie, and of course Veronica. "Dean and I showed up together, and it was... weird. It was quiet, and safe, except for SHIELD getting on our asses. We looked for cases, and didn't find anything that checked out. We investigated the Mayan Apocalypse, in case it was going to come true in this universe, but it didn't. And then we... sort of settled in. Or, I did... he had to adjust a few times, since he went back and forth. But I've been here for a while now, watching people come and go. It's been... mostly good. Not as quiet as it was when we arrived-- we had a terrorist scare, and a fear gas incident, and some crazy stuff has come through the tesseract, and of course it's not all that fun when people disappear back through the tesseract. But I've been happy here. Getting a chance to meet mom, getting a second and third and now fourth chance with you, being on better terms with Dean, too. Meeting people from my future and from other worlds. Most importantly, Veronica."
He smiled down at his hands, absentmindedly twisting his fingers together. "Like I told you, she knows...well, everything. I've never... I didn't think that could even be possible, a relationship like this. But she's, well." Unique didn't quite cover it. Really something was a horrible understatement. And anything sappier wasn't something he really wanted to say aloud; those kinds of sentiments belonged deep down in his heart, or expressed to her alone. "And this universe sets us up for honesty, because everything's out in the open whether we like it or not. It's set me up for more than that, too. I haven't had to choose between family or Veronica, or hunting and school. I've had all of it, and it finally feels like all the pieces of my life are starting to come together."
Except for the uncertainty of being able to hold onto it all, with the way people could disappear without any warning-- either his family members or Veronica, or Sam himself. But there was a catch to everything. It was worth the risk.
