Who: Peter Parker (616) & May Parker (MC2)
When: Sometime last week! 10...ish?
Where: A rooftop in NYC (as spiders are want to be).
What: Peter asks May for some help with his on-going investigations! Gasp!
Rating: Low, it's the Parkers!
The roofs were capped with snow -- the first real white coating of the year -- which made landings little more interesting, sure, but Peter touched down and purchased solid footing without too much trouble. He pivoted around, waiting for May to join him. It wouldn’t be a long patrol tonight with the temperatures dipping and things steadily icing over; there was MJ’s threat of confinement to bedrooms if anyone so much as got a little fever. Thing was, though… they needed to talk. People wouldn’t consider that you could be in the middle of nowhere in the thick of New York City, but travel a few stories up and you could find a nondescript plane of roofing with the same vent perched atop as a thousand other high rises. It was about as private as it got up here. “Hey, just gonna pause for a moment since I think the City is behaving for now,” he told May. Peter tilted his head after. Nope, no argument from a well-timed siren to be heard. They were clear. May was enjoying herself a little too much. She never slipped, she was like a magnet on the buildings. And every time she landed well, she gave her father a wry little grin. Like, look at me, I can do it I can do it. When he asked her to pause, May was ready to quip, “New York, the city that never sleeps but sometimes behaves.” She took a seat on the edge of the roof and immediately regretted it. Wet spandex butt. Drat. “Auuuugh noooo!” May was no longer paying attention to Peter, but attempting to shake all the snow off her bum. “I --” Peter watched May traverse the rooftop, plonk down, and then try to dust off the half-melted snow. There was a small laugh. Couldn’t be helped. “Hey. Hey, May. Trying to have a conversation with you. Eyespots facing front, if you’d be so kind.” He’d slinked over, snow crunching underfoot, and swiveled her around by the shoulders. “You with me?” May held her first two fingers up to her eyes and then pointed at him with them. “Eyespots to eyespots, Daddio.” She abandoned the fruitless job of trying to dry her rear. “What’s up?” Her stomach flipped. They’ve had a lot of conversations lately. MJ wasn’t here for this one, maybe it wasn’t that bad-- or-- OR maybe it was even better. “I’m gonna ask for your help,” Peter started. The hand that jutted up and reached behind his neck couldn’t be helped. He was still unsure if this was the best approach, but there wasn’t a manual on trying to look after the kid that belonged to another universe’s you. The super powers part just made it way more complicated, too. “I know this world doesn’t seem as dangerous, but there’s a lot of stuff beneath the surface. Stuff that I’ve been keeping my eyes on. And… well, it’s getting to the point where a team’s getting formed up. Still following, kiddo?” When asked for help, May thought it was something MJ related. Form a surprise engagement party? Don’t mind if she do! But then it started to sound rough. “Yeah, I’m still following. What kind of dangerous?” She pulled her mask up over her face so that it rested on her forehead. “See, see my eyes? I’m following.” What could be going on here with basically every superhero ever here? Peter followed suit, his mask peeled back to expose his face. Usually there’d be a slightly off-kilter smile there, but his mouth was a straight, solemn line. “Osborn dangerous. We -- Ben, Kaine, and Wasp -- we think he’s got a whole operation going. The press says he’s ailing and he hasn’t been seen, but Oscorp is just bad news.” Peter breathed out a sigh, hands clapping atop May’s shoulders so he could look her directly in the eyes. “So, that’s where we are. Been watching Oscorp in turns. If I bring you into this, I need to to promise me that you’ll stick to patrols with myself or your uncles. Whaddaya say?” His proposal was actually on the same level as a proposal to her mother. Also, knowing all that Osborn did in her ‘verse-- in Peter’s as well, it became monstrously important to her. If they could stop Osborn here before he did any real damage? It would be just as good as time-travel. May began nodding as soon as he said If I bring you into this. “Yes. Yes. Very careful. Stick to you guys. Super by the book, following protocol like … like someone who follows it closely.” A small, sheepish grin, “Like someone not me.” There was a moment’s silence before Peter nodded. “All right,” he replied, eyes closing for a brief few ticks, “And what we’re gonna do is get your mask fitted with a comm system next -- shouting’s great, but it’s easy to get split up.” His hands shifted from her shoulders as he tugged May straight into a hug. “And I’m not losing you, okay? That won’t happen.” May nodded, starting to think about how cool comm systems would be. Then her father was squeezing the poo out of her. A beat passed where she just let him hug-- and then she wrapped her arms around him. “It’s okay. I’m here to stay.” It felt like a time to knock on wood but she just let the moment happen. “Someone told me the other day we’re lucky. Maybe all our bad luck was just trying to outweigh this awesome situation where we’re all together?” Trying to make sense of it was grounding, okay? “Maybe,” Peter managed, before letting his arms go slack and taking a step back from May. “Maybe that’s it,” he repeated. Fingers pinched the edge of his mask to pull it back down; it was still cold out and standing still was beginning to saunter into the bad idea realm. About halfway through that, though, a siren pierced the snow-cushioned landscape. Peter yoinked the mask down the rest of the way before turning to the younger spider. “Man, can’t even take a five minute breather. Back to work for us. Ready, kiddo?” May nodded as she gently pulled her mask down. She tucked her hair into the mask and held her hands out, “Considering it’s going to take us five minutes to sort it out, I think that’s fair.” A little arrogance never hurt anyone. “Race you.” She went running for the edge but not as fast as she could. She wanted to show her dad she would wait up, that she could be responsible. She had to a lot to prove now that he put so much faith in her. |
