Mara Jade had never let grief, or disappointment, or frustration, become a stopping point in her life. She had always been one to keep going. She looked at the task in front of her and she continued it, regardless of whether or not she had an emotionally devastating situation in her life. This had happened time and time again, and this week it had happened once again after Luke Skywalker’s departure. The Farmboy – really, truly, literally Luke had been the Farmboy here – had returned. Mara had known that he couldn’t stay here forever. After all, the he had a destiny awaiting him. There was an Empire to fight, a religious order to re-establish, and family demons to discover to work through, and a Galaxy in need of liberating. Mara could know all of these things, however, and still find herself missing Luke. Yes, she had struggled with what exactly their relationship here ought to be. After all she remembered things that had never happened to him, and she had fallen in love with someone who had experienced events that Luke here had yet to experience. But in spite of all of these things, Mara had also found herself making memories that she treasured. They had gone ice skating and gone in search of silly figurines of themselves, and for all the potential and actual awkwardness she might have felt, there was so much good in the past year that now she could not help but miss his presence. It also made her wonder what her own place was. So many people had been here from their galaxy and so many had now gone. Why was she still here? Why had she been here over a year now? Why when others had come and gone – even Leia had come and gone and then returned? She wasn’t certain if she hoped that Luke didn’t come back – stayed in his own galaxy and in his own life – or if she hoped that he did, but perhaps a bit older. It would be nice to be remembered, even if it wasn’t quite as far along as she remembered. But all of these were stray thoughts worked in around dozens of required SHIELD activities and Mara truly wouldn’t have had it any other way. She was grateful she’d joined SHIELD and she’d decided to become an agent. It was more like what she was used to than most of the other careers she could have likely have chosen from as a refugee from another galaxy who was not used to the culture and history of Earth. And during times like these it kept her busy as well – and busy meant that she didn’t sit and think about all of the things that she wished instead. And because she did feel as though the things SHIELD did were generally useful to the planet it gave her a sense of accomplishment as well. Not only was she busy, but she was helping, and for someone who had all the memories of a Jedi Knight – that was important. Still, in the break of the weekend she found herself hoping Luke might return - Maybe. And if he did, she could hope that they could continue their friendship - if not exactly the same as before. |
