The first thing Rikki thought was that she was an idiot. Not that she was scared, not that she was going to die, not that her head felt like it had been deprived oxygen, but that she was an idiot. Getting caught was beginning to get a bit old hat but of course it would be her. The one with no powers but just a hell of a lot of training for a kid who had just wanted to be a dancer was of course going to get herself captured over the girl with her spider powers or some jackoff with super speed. She opened her eyes slowly and took in the scene in front of her. Abandoned warehouse, it was always an abandoned warehouse. She was on the floor, hands zip tied behind her. And he didn’t seem to be anywhere in sight. But that hadn’t meant anything. Forcing her pounding memory back, the guy had literally just disappeared when they came up on him. She hadn’t even seen when he had reappeared to grab her. Just red and a sharp pain in her temple that probably had a massive bruise there that had to look super awesome, she hadn’t even seen his actual face. So, captured, that was fun. Zip ties weren’t handcuffs, she could break them without breaking her thumbs. Which was good, Rikki was not looking forward to breaking both her thumbs again anytime soon. Pulling herself off the floor best she could onto her knees and off the floor that was really gross, she angled to try and break them against her back. All she needed was the appropriate amount of force, it’d sting but it could be done. “I wouldn’t do that.” As he spoke their target melted into view. And look at that, a bright red coat. Fashionable. And also apparently invisible. Which was just peachy, Barnes. You picked the invisible serial killer to go after. But there was not much time for internal berating as there was a knife tip pointed against her throat as he leaned over her. Evil was always looming, it couldn’t just be polite. “You and your little friends got in my way.” “It’s sort of our thing.” Rikki attempted to spit out but her jaw ached and it sounded more grumpy then quippy. Her ribs really hurt. Had he just thrown her here? That would have been seriously rude if he had. But she kept eyes level with his because hell if she was going to let him know that she was scared at all. Because it didn’t matter that she didn’t have any powers. No, what made her a hero was the fact that powers didn’t matter. She was going to stand up to guys like this no matter how weak they might think she is. No one could take that away from her. Scared? Sure. But situations like this happened and giving into that would do her no good. She could memorize his face, it was so close to hers there was no mistaking it. He smiled that same twisted smile that crooks always seemed to have. “It’s not going to be your thing anymore.” The knife was trailing down her throat and she remembered the glimpses that she had gotten checking into the case. The bodies had been ripped apart, like it was from an animal or something. And here was the animal right in front of her. Rikki waited till the knife was at a safer part of her neck before making her move. His head was too close to hers, that was a mistake. Rikki slammed her head forward, cracking it sharp against his skull as the knife cut a shallow cut against the side of her neck. Not deep enough to hit anything, but it was going to bleed like hell. He swore and pitched back and Rikki kept as much of her jostled wits about her as possible. Remember your training Barnes, it is the only thing that will get you out of this place alive. She pushed up quickly, getting to her feet as he stumbled and slamming her wrists against the curve of her hip with enough force to break out of the bonds. And that was when he looked straight at her and disappeared. It might have been the pain, it might have been the extra head injury she had just given herself, but mights had nothing to do with the fact that she couldn’t see him anymore and there was no way to track him. All Rikki could do was run in the opposite direction of where he had been. A huge big warehouse that likely he knew every nick and cranny of. “Run little mouse!” his voice echoed up into the rafters of the warehouse as she tried to find a door. She looked around blindly to try and find him but the echo made it impossible to pinpoint a noise. How the hell was she going to get away when he could be anywhere? She wasn’t. And a Barnes didn’t give up. Steeling herself, Rikki felt her fists curl. “I’m not a mouse.” She hissed under her breath. If he wanted to play cat and mouse, she was going to have to go find him before he found her. She just needed to figure out how to find someone she couldn’t see or hear. Easy. Right, she needed to find her jacket. It had to be somewhere. Invisible didn’t mean that he wasn’t solid anymore. She could hit him, she could maybe even blind him. If she could blind him, trip him up, maybe that was the only chance she had and damn it she was going to take it. |
