It amazes me that Muggles are so consumed with spending beyond their means that there are numerous multibillion dollar companies whose business model relies on the interest generated by charging the people who are unable to pay off the bills collected on their credit cards.

Is it really that rampant? I can scarcely imagine it.

	Right, so in other words, about half the people here. There is no magic whatsoever in my world, and we also lack the consumer culture present here, so I wouldn't say this is a universally muggle phenomenon. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

I'd estimate about that- there are plenty of people here, after all, who might not be magical but have other comparable supernatural powers.

Civil society was essentially destroyed as a result of war, and in response to the destruction and chaos, Chicago gated itself off from the world and attempted a type of experiment to destroy man's capacity for evil. The population was divided into five factions, each which valued some sort of noble characteristic, and it's the opposite of that characteristic that they blamed the most for the world's problems. The factions are Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (kindness), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), and Erudite (intelligence). People live their lives by these values and one's job is also geared towards their faction. As there is no faction that values entertainment, we have a considerably less materialistic society than the one here.

It worked fine for decades and it wasn't a bad way to live, really- just different. It did fall apart into something rather horrifying though, I'll admit. I suppose there wouldn't be books if it didn't.

I'm from Dauntless~~, but I was-~~ It is rather limiting. I don't entirely agree with the faction system, to be honest. There are some people who are considered divergent which means they have more flexible minds than most. You don't have to remain in the faction you're born into, however. You can switch, so it's at least not so restrictive in that sense.

	Somehow I'm not surprised. At Hogwarts we have the House system, where we're divided into Houses depending on our traits. And so an entire House was villainised as evil backstabbers. Yeah, I've heard other people mentioning the house system- did you like it? There was a lot of stereotyping and villainizing in my time too- people tend to exaggerate the importance of their faction trait while putting down the others, when really, people should probably strive to be selfless, kind, honest, brave, and intelligent if they're going to bother to strive towards being anything.

It depends on the faction, but generally there are always a good number of kids who did. I actually switched, and so it was my job to train all the transfer initiates each year. Dauntless normally has a good number of transfers, but they don't all make it through.

	I did and I didn't. What I disliked most was that people automatically dismissed my House as being full of villains without even getting to know any of us. I can understand that. Well, I personally don't place much faith in those types of systems to tell you what a person's really like.

There are only ten spots for both Dauntless born and transfer initiates combined. The initiation rigorously tests both your physical strength as well as your psychological strength to fight your fears. Based on these tests, initiates are ranked, and anyone who scores below a 11 doesn't make it in to the faction.

	No, there are just only ten new members of Dauntless each year in addition to those who are already members, such as myself, for instance. As for the other factions, I know Erudite also has a rigorous initiation which numerous people fail. Abnegation and Amity, however, accept virtually all who wish to join them. 	It is, but I don't believe people should be divided the way that they are in my world, so I don't mind that difference. The city in general is a bit much at times though. It must be different for you as well. How do you like it? (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)
