“This is ridiculous,” Karolina whispered in a voice tight and low with annoyance as her fingers moved over the top of the laptop so she could slowly close it. What she really wanted to do was throw the entire thing through the wall, but that wasn’t in her character, anger was often suppressed until it was just given up on and moved away from. Karolina couldn’t harbor anger the way others could, it was draining and unnecessary, and if it weren’t for the fact that she was trying to help her friends by getting money while trying to follow her dream—she wouldn’t have felt annoyed at all. Instead she was hitting brick walls no matter what route she tried to take. If it wasn’t horrible photographers with rancid portfolios, guys from the porn industry trying to pass themselves off as photographers, it was the simple fact that money makes money and she had no money to spend on the proper photographer to be able to get the best shots to get the best roles which would get the most money. She had spent hours scrolling through casting calls specifically in New York earlier; some jobs would pay $300 a day, even commercials for toothpaste would be around $15 an hour if she could get the right part, some even gave $200 just for auditioning if you got a part. But she couldn’t walk into any call without a portfolio, and most resumes were typed on the back of headshots—so walking in with just paper wasn’t going to work. “I’m going to be stuck sitting people at some restaurant, if not being a total waitress.” She didn’t look down on waitresses or hostesses, but she had always thought…well, here was the first horrible part about not being in their own world. She had no clout to fall back on in this world, being a Dean meant nothing here. She couldn’t even fall back on whatever fear her parents had caused as part of the Pride to wheedle and deal for money the way the group once had under Nico. It wasn’t her favorite plan, but they’d all learned how to do things they didn’t want to do just to survive…that was the code of a Runaway, right? Guess being a hostess would now fall under that survival plan. “Damn it.” She hissed still trying to keep her voice down so as not to alarm Xavin. Upon arrival at the tower Karolina had thought a thousand free dollars a month for the first two months would be amazing, but Chase was right, it was gone pretty fast. Between buying a new wardrobe, food, and handing some money over to Nico for the group saving…she was already pretty tapped with just about a hundred dollars left in her pocket and she’d only been here a week. The realization had the palm of her right hand slapping against her forehead, she went through nearly a thousand dollars in just a weeks’ time! Granted, that was like a weekly allowance under her parent’s regime. Then again, she hadn’t lived under her parent’s authority for a long time now; it wasn’t a good enough excuse anymore. Thirty seconds more was all Karolina was willing to spend on feeling down about everything, once she decided there was nothing fate could do to keep things from working out, the world seemed just a little brighter—which seemed contradictory to the actuality of the sun currently going down. Her pout deepened just a little as she looked out the window to see the orangey pink glow the sky was often bathed in as twilight started to move into dusk. Being alone as the sky darkened was not something Karolina was fond of, it often brought lonely feelings of isolation that sent chills down her back during the warmest summer night. Quickly, without thinking, she was up from her chair and half gliding from her bedroom towards Xavin’s room. She hadn’t heard much noise from her all day, but hoped that she was still around. “Hey Xav?” Karolina called out halfway towards the other room, knocking lightly on the door even as she began to open it, “Xav, want to watch a movie and just kind of…hang out on the couch tonight? I can make popcorn.” She offered as eyes skimmed the other’s room, though she didn't enter, instead just propped herself against he doorframe, "Or we could go out if you'd like..." |
