I know that it's frustrating to walk outside and be subject to criticism, but before you pass judgment on these people, I would ask that you remember that the majority of us are guests of this world. There are many countries and other planets that would not tolerate the presence of world-travellers, however unwitting or unwilling their presence. We are fortunate that they have accepted us to the extent that we are able to work in their establishments and dine at their restaurants. Their tolerance may be grudging at times, but there are many places that would offer refugees no tolerance at all. Please try to imagine how your world would react if there was a sudden influx of stranded refugees and a simultaneous rise in violence, with or without a causal relationship. I suspect that your public's reaction would be much the same, if not worse.
Freedom of speech -- and, specifically, freedom of protest -- is one of the freedoms that many of you have fought to protect in your own worlds. It is one of the freedoms that terrorists like The Mandarin would like to take away from us. It is a freedom that was prescribed alongside the freedoms that you enjoy every day. That it is less pleasant to see it exercised against you makes it no less meaningful or important. If anything, the freedoms that are the hardest to defend are the ones most worth protecting.
Be grateful that we reside in a city whose citizens are free to yell and wave signs at us. It is the very manifestation of liberty, and something to which all free nations should aspire. Had they no such liberty, it is very unlikely that we would still be here to speak of it.
