Who:River Tam and Elspeth Gordie
When:Wednesday June 26
Where:The breakroom at the Barking Lot
What: Having lunch and chatting
Rating:G
Elspeth grabbed her sandwich from the fridge in the staffroom at the back of where she worked and made herself a cup of tea before taking a seat at the table. She really did enjoy working there - the people were really nice and she enjoyed talking to the animals which most people didn’t find odd now. Out of all of them, River understood that the most as she also understood animals though not perhaps in the way Elspeth herself talked to them but it was still a talent that came in handy. Speaking of River, the door to the room had just opened and the young girl had walked in. Well not so young she was actually a similar age to Elspeth it just sometimes didn’t seem that way. Both had gone through so much, Elspeth with her parents execution for sedition, growing up in orphanages then being sent to Obernewtyn and over throwing the people who ran it giving it to the rightful owner before yet again saving it again thanks to being able to rescue Dragon. River though had been experimented on before going on the run but somehow she had maintained a lot of her innocence though she had a way of perceiving things that others didn’t. “Hello,” Elspeth said with a smile. “HI,” River replied and sat down, opening the bag that she had her lunch in. Simon always made her lunch for her and today it was a ham and cheese sandwich along with some oranges which River loved. She liked her job at the Barking Lot a great deal and had come to enjoy spending time with Elspeth. Since her arrival in New York, River was feeling much better and making friends was becoming easier. She knew she still a ways to go but things were looking up. “How are you doing?” she asked, taking a bite of her lunch. They hadn’t been too busy that morning and River had spent part of the time studying. “I’m glad it’s not been really busy today.” “I’m doing well,” she told River with a smile. “It is good yes, at least we have time to breathe and aren’t run off our feet.” Which was good, those days while they went past really quickly left her and the others exhausted by the end of the day which wasn’t fun. “Hawke and I have been working on getting the garden up and running on the Ranch which is going well. What about you?” she asked curiously. She knew River had been close to her ships crew and with Mal and Inara gone, Elspeth had been keeping a discreet eye on the other girl and while she seemed to be coping alright now it was sometimes hard to tell with her. “I haven’t been to the ranch to be honest,” River said quietly. “I don’t know why I haven’t gone. They’ve asked me to but I don’t want to go. I’m afraid that everyone will want to live there and I don’t feel safe.” She couldn’t explain why she didn’t but somehow she felt safe in the Tower. Maybe it was because the building was so large and she could lost in the crowd. Maybe it was just that she didn’t want to leave the friends she had made here, particularly Fiver. Whatever it was, River knew she didn’t want to live there. “That’s understandable, you should do what you are most comfortable with,” Elspeth told her with a friendly smile. “You could always visit when you do feel comfortable but there really is nothing stopping you from not living there. You can do what you want and I’m sure your friends will understand no matter what you decide to do.” “I’ll go out there sometime,” River said. Simon had mentioned it to her but she’d always tried to avoid going. She couldn’t say why the ranch didn’t feel right to her when she’d never been there but it didn’t. “You have a garden out there, don’t you?” “Whenever you want too will be fine. You’d want to go out there and see it first,” she said with a friendly smile. “We do yes, it’s nice. Did you want to help us with it?” she asked River. River thought about it for a moment. She knew she’d have to go out there sooner or later and if she could go with a friend that would be helpful. Maybe Simon could go too. “Can I bring Simon with me?” she asked. “If I can, I’d like to help you.” Perhaps seeing the ranch would settle her misgivings. “Of course, he’s more than welcome to come,” Elspeth told her with a smile. She did like River a lot but it seemed to her that she was insecure in a lot of ways though she did seem to be improving. As long as she was happy though Elspeth didn’t mind and the more the better perhaps. “Good. I’ll talk to him about it.” River had come a long way since she’d arrived in New York but when it came right down to it, she still felt safest with Simon. She was making new friends and getting to know more people but she still preferred her brother to be as close as possible if she needed him. “Sounds good to me,” Elspeth said with a grin. “Just let me know and I’m sure Hawke will have no problem with it either.” |
