Kitty knew she so far gave him a fairly ambiguous idea of where she stood on the issue. Yeah, they were in the past, she used the past tense about loving him and their relationship. And then she acknowledged there was still something there too. "I had a lot of time to think about it. I know you need time too. I get it. I'll give you time and space if you want it. Whatever you want." At least she had the chance to tell him, to talk about it. He was hurt and she knew that; hurting him was a skill she got good at, apparently.
"But if you want to know where I stand. I'm older, I'm wiser, and I know how badly I screwed up. And I never stopped caring about you." If it seemed strange Kitty stayed away from his funeral and from him, although she kept tabs on him, it was more from shame and pain. She knew if she saw him she'd lose her dignity and pride trying to apologize, but hey, already got that done now. "I'm single. So. Take that whatever way you want to."
She chanced a look at him and forced a smile. "We can put a pause on that, but you're still stuck with me as nurse for right now. I'm not leaving you here alone." He could probably order her away if he wanted to. She hoped he'd let her stay instead.
