She was always fast. A slight body and small legs she may have had, but she was able to dart through her rafters in the tower quick enough with a grace that she learned over the years from having to deal with added weight in several, several feet of hair. By the time she was eighteen her ability to balance herself despite seventy feet of hair would be a miracle to anyone else. It was a miracle to the locals of New York City who wondered how she managed to walk with the added mass, let alone run down flights of stairs and through a lobby with it half gathered in her arms, the rest trailing behind her like the train of a wedding gown. One might argue, though, that a person trying to make it to work on time while running hours behind would likely be able to manage anything with that sort of panic and determination. She was always fast but she wasn't fast enough and panic was exactly what she felt when she tried to dart across the street before the cars at a nearby light zoomed by. She had made it but one car seemed faster than the rest and nearly caught the tail end of her hair, which she pulled on quickly to tug it out of the way. The last few feet was the distraction that caused the driver to veer off to the right, which caused a man on a bike in another lane to be struck. The sound of the lighter metal bike and the man's body hitting the side of the vehicle made a sickening sort of sound that had Rapunzel going still, still, still. Birds chirping merrily in the small trees planted in grates outside nearby storefronts took to the sky in flight from the noise. "Oh no.." she rbeathed. Rapunzel turned around and saw people already starting to crowd around what was apparently the man on the bike laying crumpled on the street. She rushed over, all of her hair held in her arms and wrapped around her shoulders. The crowd parted at the sight of her and Rapunzel dropped her hair. "I can fix this," she said, to no one in particular. Her eyes were burning already with unshed tears at the sight of so much blood and crooked limbs. It was all her fault but she could fix it and no one seemed to argue with her, not even when she dropped to her knees and began to drape her hair around the man's body. By the time she sang her song it was with her voice wavering, lips trembling and fat tears rolling down her cheeks. "Flower gleam and glow..." But it worked. It wasn't like with Matty where something about him fought against her ability. It worked like it always had before; her hair glowed as bright as sunshine from root to tip and by the time her song was over the man was gasping awake, blood still on the ground and even staining Rapunzel's clothes and hair, but all of his limbs were straight, his body healed. "I'm sorry, it's m-my fault, I'm sorry," she tried to say as everyone started to talk all at once about what happened. The man kept checking his body but Rapunzel stood up and ran back into the tower. She collapsed near the elevators, a part of her hair a messy red color and splotches of red still on her dress. Rapunzel drew her knees up to her chest and began to cry. It didn't seem to matter that she healed the man after, she still caused the accident because of her hair, the same stupid thing that saved him. |
