It's fascinating to see which traditions stick, which evolve, and which are forgotten to time. I dismissed the mistletoe as holiday frippery, but it's still quite popular. I doubt anyone these days could describe a proper La Mas Ubhal without putting it to their smart telephone. I suppose the Christmas tree might persist, though it is quite young. Only three-hundred years before and someone would call you a Prussian barbarian if you thought it proper to hack up some arbor and decorate it with painted toys and sugar ornaments, but the Living seem to enjoy the notion now.

I suggest that those wishing to partake in the festivities take care to watch their belongings, and do not go out alone at night.

There are many who would take advantage of a merry soul, even in this Holy month.

Don't call them that.

I haven't called anyone a Prussian barbarian in at least two-hundred years.

No. Not that. I don't even know what that is.

I meant, "The Living".

I was instructed by one Vampire Slayer named Buffy not to use the term "Mortals" because she found it condescending. I agreed to use "the Living" as a show of good faith. Now, I am five seconds away from just using the word of "brunch".

How about "people"? Or "persons". Which is what they are. And don't each people!

Contrary to what you might think, I, too, am a person.

I don't think you aren't! I think you think they aren't.

I know what I'd call you.

They are people. They are Living people. Mortals, to use another no-no word. There is a distinction.

There are many words.

Probably are many words, but I like Silas. When I know someone's name, I tend to use it.

The only distinction, I think, is that there is always, always one between who and what you are.

Names hold a power unto their own.

And there is a distinction between them and me. I do not call them people because I would not presume to be of them.

The holidays in my home world are completely different from these. Christmas seems a very strange celebration to me.

It is, particularly now that it's less religious. It's very interesting to see the Pagan influences mixing with commercialism and Christian overtones. And I like the bubble lights.

The lights are pretty.

I don't have Christians or Pagans at home, either. Plenty of Commercialists, though. Our December holiday is Hogswatch, but it falls on the 36th - which I understand this world is also lacking.

We have certainly lost our 36th along the way, yes.

What is Hogswatch?

A solstice festival, essentially. Originally, people sacrificed pigs to ensure that the sun would rise after the darkest night, and named a king in the new year - the Hogfather. The sacrifice turned into giving gifts of sausages and black puddings, then sugar piglets, and now the Hogfather brings gifts to children who believes in him, and still ensures that the sun rises again and the new year comes.

Very similar to Christmas in some regards, and not in others.

I understand that black pudding remains a "thing", here. Perhaps you can reminisce.

Well, then. Now all I need is a pink sugar piglet.

Is mistletoe the only thing you've seen stick around over the years? Makes sense, people generally like having excuses to kiss people. Pervy as we are.
