Mara Jade used the Force to help her jump higher, flip over Luke’s head and land on the other side, ready to block anything Luke might have to throw at her. They had been training for nearly forty-five minutes and as focused as she was, Mara couldn’t help but allow her mind to drift for just a moment to the question she really was hoping that Luke might ask her. But she had made up her mind and if he didn’t ask her today? She was going to just out with it and ask him. Mostly because she had this suspicion that people would expect her to be at the Prom. Or at least that was what she was telling herself. It wasn’t as if she really needed to go to a dance, after all. She’d been to more than one as the Emperor’s Hand and this would be probably nowhere near as ritzy as parties at the Imperial Palace had been, but at the same time, it had been a long time since she’d been dancing with anyone and Mara had always enjoyed dancing, even if it had only been a cover for her work for the Emperor. For the moment though she was forced to draw her attention back to Luke. “Come on, Farmboy,” she gave him an almost taunting smile. “You’re off your game this morning.” Mara was right, Luke was rather distracted this morning. No particular reason he was just having trouble concentrating. If he thought maybe he could come up with a reason but nothing came to mind at that particular moment. “I’m trying!” he protested. “Everyone has an off day. Didn’t you have one last week?” he retorted. A lot was on his mind from the departure of his parents, sister and son and then Leia’s rearrival. Mostly to do with the comment Mara had made awhile back about the possibility of them - in that case Ben- coming back. Leia had so why wouldn’t the others? He hoped they did, it was better for them if they did but he hoped his parents came from a good time in their relationship. Plus there was that thing with Ivy... He still had no idea what to think of that. Mostly he was a teenage boy in an really awkward situation. “Maybe,” Mara admitted, but she grinned as she did so. Yes, she had bad days once in awhile, but today she was having a pretty decent one - or would be if she could stop fretting about a stupid dance. It seemed absurd when she thought about it logically, because what difference did it make if she went or if Luke went or if they went together. Their entire relationship here was this sort of bizarre not quite certain what they were thing, and going to a dance together wasn’t likely to change that at all. She moved, stepped back obviously out of range and gave him a smile. “Take a minute, I think I need a drink anyway.” Mara had left a water bottle to the side and she walked over now to retrieve it, pushing her hair back, and taking a sip of the water. If it didn’t matter - and really it didn’t - then there really was no particular reason why she ought not to ask him. What was the worst he was going to say? ‘I don’t want to go?’. She dropped the water bottle and looked back at him. “Skywalker, are you planning on going to the prom?” Luke nodded, moving over to the edge of the room he grabbed his bottle of water and took a swig of the water. Choking on the second sip he had taken when Mara asked the question he took a moment in answering. Once he could breathe again without coughing he looked at her curiously. “I haven’t really thought about it actually,” he admitted. He had seen people talking about it but really it just didn’t enter his mind. Plus he had no one to go with - right? “Why, you thinking of going?” he asked curiously. “I’d thought about it,” Mara said with a good deal more calmness than she really felt. Maybe she could draw on the Force a bit to help her nerves, she thought wryly as she looked over at Luke trying to decide if she should ask him or not. She wasn’t really certain what his reaction to her question had meant. Did he want to go? Did he not want to go? Had she just startled him? Kriff, Mara, get a grip. This isn’t like you. “I’m sure it’ll be rather silly,” she said, taking another sip of her water. “We used to have balls and dances at the Imperial Palace all of the time and they were always opportunities for political back-stabbing, and information gathering, but I doubt there will be any of that here, considering that most people don’t have any real connection to local politics.” And now you are rambling. Stop. “If I did go, would you want to come too?” There. She took a drink from the water bottle and glanced over at him, hoping he couldn’t actually see how nervous that stupid little question had made her. Luke looked at Mara oddly. She wasn’t usually one to ramble like that which made him think that something was up. He had no idea what though. He did raise an eyebrow at the comment about imperial parties, that wasn’t surprising but he had no idea why she had brought it up. Oh, that was why. After she asked if he wanted to come with her, which was what he assumed she meant he couldn’t help but blink a couple of times. “Sure,” he finally replied with a grin. “Will be fun,” which was true. Luke hadn’t really thought about the prom much as he didn’t think Mara would go and he really didn’t have anyone else to go with. He had considered asking Gaige but while they seemed to get on they were just friends and he hadn’t known if that was acceptable or if it would make things awkward. Mara was just as different but he supposed it was alright and it was just confusing for him truthfully. Still he was looking forward to it. Obi-Wan had meant to join Luke and Mara a good bit ago but he’d been caught up reading and the time had slipped by him. He had also been working on mentally preparing for the SHIELD training he was about to begin. When he walked into the room though he immediately sensed that something was going on although he couldn’t be sure of what it was. “Good morning,” he said cheerfully. “I’m sorry I’m late. Am I interrupting something?” Luke’s grin had spurned on a grin from Mara and she was about to speak when she realized that Obi-Wan had joined them and she caught herself flushing slightly, despite the fact that she knew Obi-Wan didn’t know exactly what he had interrupted, he obviously had interrupted, and she shook her head and offered Obi-Wan a smile. “Not really, no,” she shrugged. “We’d just taken a short break, and were discussing prom plans and whether or not we were going.” She decided not to go into a lot of detail. “We were just thinking we should start back up. Well, or I was...” She glanced over at Luke and offered him a shrug. Luke jumped in surprise when Obi-Wan finally arrived. He had forgotten he was supposed to turn up he had gotten so involved with duelling with Mara. Still he realized that he shouldn’t be surprised, Obi-Wan was teaching them after all. “Yeah starting back up sounds good!” Luke said in a rush, a slight blush on his cheeks. “Prom plans?” Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow. He remembered his conversation with Mara and reached out to her with the Force, curious to know if she’d asked Luke. It would appear that she had and he tried very hard not to smile. “Well I hope that you enjoy it. I’ve decided that I’m not going. I’m a bit too old even though they say everyone is welcome. Also I’m afraid that I can’t dance.” “No?” Mara looked over at Obi-Wan thankful for the distraction from thinking about what Obi-Wan might be thinking. “Well maybe we need to start a new training session,” she gave him a quick, teasing grin. “We can have the ‘teach the Jedi Master new tricks’ training session. Believe me, if you can duel with a lightsaber you can dance - they’re both all about moving the right ways...” She stretched, thankful that the awkward moment seemed to have passed. and she glanced back to Skywalker. “I’m ready to get started back up. Master Kenobi, where would you like us to begin again?” “Maybe we could do that,” he said with a grin. “but right now let’s get back to what you were doing before I got here. Again I’m sorry that I was late. Why don’t we pick up from where you were. Show me what you were working on. I want to see if the two of you have been practicing on your own as I asked you to do.” Obi-Wan enjoyed working with Luke and Mara. He knew that once his SHIELD training began, he’d be busy and times like these would be rare so he cherished them when they came. Both Luke and Mara were excellent with a light saber which didn’t surprise him in the least. “Begin,” he said and crossed his arms, ready to watch them duel. Luke had to grin at Mara’s point about dueling and dancing being similar. “Sounds good,” he said moving into position to begin duelling Mara again. He hoped Obi-wan would be happy with what they were doing and any practice they could get was good. Plus it was fun and spending time with Mara and Uncle Obi was something he would never turn down. |
