I think that my struggles have given me a certain amount of perspective, particularly my struggles with addiction and my role in not only my recovery but the recovery of other members at AA meetings. It did take me a long time not to only feel sorry for myself and think of addiction as a personal failing.
When I reached my one-year, I had to recognise that accepting my chip wasn't about the commemoration of my one-year, but that it represented something to others, and it made them realise that if I could do it, they could as well and that that was equally as important.
I don't tend to give social groups enough credit, I think.
