"Not sure." Cloud shrugged and glanced up, finally meeting Zack's eyes. He smiled a little as he said, "He keeps popping up. Kind of like you, but I can't say I'm ever glad to see him. You offered to help the last time he was around. I'm not sure how you managed it, but I guess you can talk to me from the Lifestream. Maybe it's because I've got so much mako in me, or maybe you're just stubborn."
Cloud leaned back, bracing his weight with both arms behind him, and looked up at what little bit of sky he could see. "But I'm supposed to be telling you these things in order. Sephiroth came back a while after I got to Midgar. We weren't sure it was him, at first. There weren't any reliable eye witnesses, but the president of Shinra was murdered, supposedly with Masamune. After that, Sephiroth disappeared again. He didn't do anyone any favors, though. Rufus took over the company, and in some ways, he was worse. He ordered the Turks to collapse a section of the plate. He murdered a whole sector, just so he could turn everyone against Avalanche. We tried to stop them, but we didn't make it in time." It was clear, as Cloud spoke, that the collapse of the plate and the lives that had been lost sill bothered him, that he still felt at least partly at fault. "We had to leave Midgar after that. Didn't have any choice. Somehow, that turned into chasing down Sephiroth. I guess ... part of me wanted revenge, even if I wasn't sure why." That was the closest he'd come to outright admitting to his memory loss since Zack had arrived.
