It was interesting that Mara had never considered travel as something she could be addicted to until she was no longer in a situation where she could easily travel. Renting a car wasn't the cheapest thing on the planet, but it was the closest that Mara was going to get to having her own transportation for the time being and so long as she wasn't doing it constantly, SHIELD salary would provide for a few trips between her and Luke and it was nice to move out of the city and outside of the places that everyone else could go to. It wasn't the same as getting in her ship (or Karrde's ship really) and flying off-world, or running errands, or visiting different planets, but it was the closest she was going to get for the moment. Mara had done some research and decided that she would put money away to do some travel on-planet at least, but that was still a ways off, so for now she would settle for getting out of the city. Today she and Luke were taking a car out to the countryside where they hoped to find a place where they could do some training without being noticed by anyone and Mara had to admit that she did enjoy these trips. The weekend the two of them had done this directly after they had first gotten their licenses had been a good way to get to know each other a bit better and that had been something Mara had been really grateful for. So today they were at it again, but just for a day, not a full weekend. The general plan was to drive up to a park, find a place where they could do some practice out of doors and out of the sight of the millions of people in New York City, and then to drive back. Mara had picked up some sandwiches and food from a deli before they left and there was most certainly room in the plan for some variation upon it - mostly a lot of driving, at least as much as they could do with the mileage limit for the car for the day. Mara had sat back in the passenger seat, allowing Luke the opportunity to drive for a while. she'd left the window open and had turned on the radio. She had to admit that the drive was visually more interesting than the blue white swirl of hyperspace, even if the destination wasn't going to be so far away, or very culturally different from where they were. Well, it might be someone culturally different as there was very certainly a difference between the urban environment of New York City which felt more like Coruscant and the rural environment of upper New York State which felt more like, well places other than Coruscant. Mara stretched a leg out and then pulled it up under her. She did miss being able to walk around while they moved. Being strapped in constantly was not that enjoyable. She pulled up the map on the phone and took a look at the estimated time to their destination: about thirty minutes. "I told you I got promoted to handler by SHIELD, didn't I?" She asked, looking over at the man sitting next to her. She couldn't help but feel a bit proud about it even if there was a part of her that enjoyed the activity of being an agent. That she'd been considered competent and responsible enough to take on this role by people who hadn't worked with her for very long was an accomplishment she felt she should feel proud of. "I really like the group I've been assigned to work with," she added. |
