Cho just felt kind of...weird. It was like she felt relatively normal in every moment except when she wasn’t intently thinking about something else - but as soon as she had a moment where there wasn’t some sort of task she had to perform, she remembered why she had been trying to keep herself constantly busy, and then it hurt. As a result she felt antsy, and the only things that were keeping her feeling somewhat okay were Quidditch and her daily runs. When she ran or flew she had to focus on what she was doing, remembering the number of laps or different strategies Roger had talked about. Roger. He had told her he was joining her on the Pitch tonight, no arguments. She was grateful for it, even if she wasn’t sure what else she felt right now. There was a small part of her that thought sarcastically maybe she should have just said yes to Roger at the beginning last year and avoided this whole mess in the first place. But that was just the irrational upset side - it wasn’t like she had any regrets about Cedric. She made her way out on to the pitch and wiped furiously at her eyes, trying to dry them before she kicked off and sped up for a quick lap around the pitch. Feelings were confusing and the right words weren’t there and she just wanted to run fast and clear out the chaotic mess of uncertainty going on in her mind. Roger was still quite confused about what was going on. Had she had a row with Cedric? She hadn’t come right out and said as much, but it was the best logical conclusion he could come to from what she’d written in her journal. Whatever it was, Roger was a little worried and his protective side naturally came out. He’d fancied Cho for ages, but that was hardly a consideration now. Above all else, she was his mate (nevermind that he wanted more) and there was no way he wasn’t going to be there when she obviously needed someone. He jogged down to the pitch, broom in hand and mounted it smoothly as he arrived. Moments later, he was in the air and coming along side her. “So, do you want to talk about it?” he asked. If she didn’t, he reckoned that was fine, but he was curious and it would be a bit easier to comfort her if he actually knew what was going on. When Roger appeared beside her it made Cho jump a bit on her broom, as she had expected to hear him approaching first, but she was probably just too distracted to notice. She tried to hide her eyes with her long hair as she hovered in mid-air; she didn’t want him to see her so obviously upset. “I--well...” She didn’t know. Did she even want to talk about it? Cho inhaled and then exhaled slowly as she tried to pick out some kind of coherent thought which she could verbalize properly. “I--I don’t know. It’s just... I guess... I’m disappointed. We were talking about the Death Eater break-out, it was just bothering me... And it got around to me saying I don’t care at all about blood status and I told him, if he was Muggleborn or even a Muggle and we’d somehow met anyway it wouldn’t matter to me. Then I asked him if he would be the same way with me. And he said he didn’t know.” She realized she was rambling and stopped herself before she continued even more. Roger probably didn’t want to hear all of that. Cho stared off across the pitch. “Can we practice a bit? I--I need to do something to keep myself busy. It doesn’t hurt when I’m busy.” Roger really didn’t like seeing Cho like this - all stammering and stuttering and obviously hurting. A part of him wanted to just go out and beat the hell out of the cause for her current mood and that impulse only grew when she explained what had happened. “Prat,” he muttered under his breath, his eyes flashing with anger. What kind of idiot would not know the answer to that. Cho was Cho and it wouldn’t matter about her blood, because she would still be her. Diggory was a bloody idiot not to see that. “Of course we can,” Roger agreed, nodding his head. Before getting to it, though, he shifted closer, his gaze catching hers. “He’s completely daft,” Roger murmured, reaching over to brush a hand briefly over her cheek. “You’re beautiful, you’re brilliant... your bloodline doesn’t have anything to do with who you are. Only an idiot would let you go so easily.” The last thing Cho needed right now was him hitting on her, but that wasn’t exactly what he was doing here. Not intentionally, anyway. She felt an odd sort of pain rise up in her chest. It was like Roger was saying all the words she wanted to hear--or had wanted to hear--from Cedric. She sniffed a bit, pinching the bridge of her nose tightly. Something had changed in the way she looked at Cedric though, as if a light had been turned off - the more she repeated the words in her head the more it hurt and the more cynical she became about the whole situation. “He said it wasn’t an easy question I asked. I don’t know why it’s not an easy question. I don’t understand. I don’t even--I don’t... Why does it matter? It just hurts, Roger. I don’t wanna hurt.” It was just frustrating. A part of her wished she could go back in time to when she first said yes to Cedric and stop herself so she could say yes to Roger. But that was just irrational, she thought, because she had had fun with Cedric and-- well she just stopped that train of thought there, before it got depressing again. “Maybe I’m just not...” Right, was what she wanted to say, but she had the feeling that might not go over well. Not worth the trouble. Not good enough. Not doing what was expected. “I--It’s stupid, forget it. Let’s just practice.” But even as she tried to brush it all off, when she looked up at him she felt like she was showing her vulnerability. At the same time she knew she could afford to do that with Roger. “It’s not stupid,” Roger argued, silently cursing the fact that they were up in the air rather than on the ground where he could hug her properly. This whole comfort thing was difficult in this position and while what he was saying was true, he desperately wanted to make her feel better, too. “You’re brilliant. Anyone who can’t see that is a daft git.” He shook his head, his eyes flashing a little angrily at the thought that Cedric or anyone could make her feel like this. “It’s an easy question for anyone with half a brain. None of that changes who you are, Cho, and he’s the idiot if he can’t see that.” Roger would have said or done anything to stop her hurting, but that didn’t make his words any less true. Diggory was a bleeding idiot. All this did was reinforce Roger’s notion that the Hufflepuff wasn’t nearly good enough for her. Cho inhaled and then exhaled slowly, wiping again absentmindedly at her eyes to keep them dry. She didn’t want to cry. She didn’t have the strength to try and argue, but as hurt as she was right now, she felt guilty, almost, when Roger called Cedric an idiot. Funny how she wanted to defend him, she thought. “I still.. care about him,” she said, almost ashamed, “and even though I don’t think I could go back, I don’t want to not know him anymore. That would almost be.. worse.” Realizing they might not actually get to practice right away, Cho said, “Do you want to go sit in the stands? For a bit?” She turned a bit on her broom. “It’s still early. And I don’t think any of the other teams are going to be out tonight.” The pitch was just a place where she felt in control and confident. Just being out here in and of itself was helping to make her feel better. And the company, well, that just made her feel more at ease. Like things would be okay. Roger didn’t really know what he could say to her still caring about Cedric or not wanting to not know him. Or, rather, he couldn’t think of anything nice to say in return to that, so he merely nodded and was happy to avoid that particular topic. As far as he was concerned, Diggory was a prat for making Cho feel like this. That was all there was to it. “Yeah, let’s do that,” he agreed when he suggested they sit in the stands for a bit. He would gladly fly with her, but he would be just as content to just sit with her, too. Once they’d landed and settled themselves in their seats, though, he slipped an arm around her almost immediately and pulled her in close to him. “It’s going to be all right,” he told her. “I promise.” Who knew if it was a promise he could safely keep, but if it was in his control at all, he would make sure his promise was kept. It was hard not to smile even a little. Cho hadn’t been kidding when she said she didn’t know what she would do without Roger in her life. He was her best friend, a confidant, and for some weird reason he kept sticking around to back her up no matter how many times she’d turned him down for a date. Trying to defend Cedric to Roger though was basically pointless - Cho knew that much, and while on any other given day she would have tried to do so, today she just didn’t have the emotional strength to argue. Especially not with the person who was there trying to make her feel better because of what had happened with Cedric. She was pretty sure that there was no changing Roger’s mind... at least for now. They sat and talked for a long while in the stands, but decided to go around the Pitch a bit for some practicing before it got too cold and too dark out. It would’ve been a shame to waste such a great night, anyway. |
