WHO: Holland Vosijk
WHAT: Arriving
WHEN: Today
WHERE: Observatory
WARNINGS: Vague spoilers for book 3 of Shades of Magic
Blinded by Osaron's spell, Holland pulled the magic of the other two Antari toward him, forcing Osaron's attention away from them and toward himself. He could see the magic around him, the threads of it in the darkness.
And then the threads turned a strange blue-white, started to swirl around him. Something was wrong. He felt something tugging at him, something entirely different from Osaron, and then everything went black.
The next thing he knew, he was waking up in a strange room to the sound of an electronic beeping. His vision was back, along with almost a year and a half of memories he'd somehow forgotten. The panic that something was wrong faded, as he remembered where he was, that his future at home was fated, that he would indeed -- as he had already done, to some extent -- go back to it at some point, but there was no need to worry about it here. A good thing, since he no longer seemed to be holding the Inheritor.
He was, however, still wearing the Antari binding ring. He immediately went to pull it off, and to his relief, it came free without a fight; in this world, at least, he did not have to chain himself to Kell and Delilah. Not unless he chose to, again.
When he put it in his pocket, he discovered the tablet that he'd had here before, or at least a replica of it. He took it out and considered it, taking the time to scroll through the network to see what he'd missed, and took stock of his new situation. There were a few main facts he was concerned with.
He'd been gone seven months, almost to the day.
He was not in Tumbleweed, but on another one of these ridiculous cruises (hopefully the ship was not possessing anyone this time).
Kell had disappeared and, so far as he could tell, had not returned. His brother and husband were still present. Marina was still here, or at least she had been a month or so ago and there was no notice of her disappearance.
Delilah Bard had arrived.
That last one was some cause for concern. Without having need of him to help with Osaron, would she try to kill him? It was possible. Probable, even. A prospect that concerned him less for his own safety and more for the safety of the ship and everyone aboard it: Delilah Bard had very little control of her magic and could be extremely destructive.
He considered, briefly, trying to hide his arrival from her, or possibly alerting the Mareshes and letting them decide whether it was safe to tell her. But the fact that they were on a ship would make hiding difficult, and he had no idea how long they would be here. If he tried to hide and was discovered, the chances of a destructive fight would only increase with time.
"Best get it over with, then," he murmured to himself, and even managed the very smallest of smiles.
It felt good to be back.
