Who: Audrey Parker and Duke Crocker
When: Friday Dec 27
What: Duke finds out Audrey's here
Where: The Grey Gull (Duke's new present)
Rating: Low

Audrey Parker was no stranger to weirdness. Ever since she had gotten to Haven there had been a daily occurrence of weirdness in her life, even if it was just trying to have a normal conversation with Vince and Dave. Being sucked into a completely different dimension after going to bed knowing Duke's father wanted her dead. As much as she wanted to dismiss showing up as some sort of dream, she knew better than to think anything was impossible now. So Audrey listened to what the people at the Bureau had to say, thanked them for their time, and when she was handed her keys to her apartment above the Grey Gull, she almost laughed out loud. Of course the Grey Gull was here too.

She thanked the taxi driver for the lift, paying him before turning to the familiar sight in an unfamiliar place. She had always wanted to go to Texas. Or had she? The real Audrey Parker had, but the truth was she had no real idea what any of her life dreams were. The thought made her press her lips together in a thin line of frustration. Taking a breath, Audrey put that thought aside and headed up the outside stairs to her apartment.

The key worked - a part of her had been worried it wouldn't - and she stepped in to a familiar sight. "If I didn't know better, I'd like I was still in Haven." She decided the best thing to do at the moment was to do an inventory of what was still in her apartment and what wasn't.

The Santa letters were weird. This place was basically Haven, but in Texas. There was also the matter of how everyone had powers and no one seemed to hide them from the other people in their group. But asking for things had been...complicated. He didn't really know what he wanted, but his box hadn't been on the Rouge and he didn't have the Gull. The Gull was a way to try to coax the universe into giving him back Audrey. At least if he had the Gull, Audrey would have a place to stay.

He didn't work at the Bureau, so he wasn't really aware of the coming part of the equation. The going part always came with a series of beeps and a list of names. He'd decided to take inventory of the things this place had. There were bars all around this place and some restaurants. He'd have to be different from everyone to get any sort of customers. He'd also have to rethink taco Tuesday. He could fool people in Maine, but he wasn't sure about people in Texas. He'd probably need to stick to authentic seafood. That would mean using the Rouge to get the things he needed or at least seeing if he could pay someone to take him to the fresh seafood places. He had a feeling that was where he needed to lean. He could get things cheaper out of state and bring them back.

The sound of footsteps on the stairs alerted him that someone was there. He grabbed for the gun under the counter and walked outside. Part of him wasn't sure if he should take the sound of the footsteps as an intruder, but there was another part that didn't trust this place enough to assume someone might not just try to take the apartment. He walked up the stairs carefully, trying not to make his approach obvious. Once the he was done being subtle, he shoved the door open. "Don't you know trespassing is- Oh." Audrey. He lowered the gun, staring a moment longer. "Hey, Audrey." He cleared his throat. "Uh...when did you get here?"

Audrey was thankful some of her clothes were here, though not all of them - that seemed like a weird thing. Why would you include some clothes in her apartment from home and not all of them? She even noticed a few of her newer pieces of decorations were not around. The random of this all did not help with her trying to figure this place out.

When the door opened violently, she reached for her gun, but was annoyed when she remembered she hadn't shown up with one. She hadn't yet seen if her back up handgun was in the safe yet. When she turned, she was ready for anyone, but was instantly relieved to find Duke. She assumed, of course, he was around if the Gull was, back she hadn't expected to see him right away. She sighed and gave him a 'thank God it's you' look, then smiled. "Hey Duke." Her hands went up on either side of her to gesture to the apartment. "Thanks for keeping this warm for me."

Her smile remained, though it was a little playful. "And to answer your question like, twenty minutes ago. The speech they give at the Bureau is really long. I think they're used to people freaking out more. They kept asking me if I was sure I understood." And she had, thank you very much.

Duke cleared his throat, setting the gun down for a moment before he thought about it. This could have been a different Audrey. This could be Mara. He hadn't run into Mara, but he'd heard some things and read others. It was weird to think about. She seemed like Audrey, but apparently Mara had been fairly good at acting.

"Yeah. Just got it back Christmas. Took me a bit to show up, but you know..." He studied her carefully. Twenty minutes ago she'd showed up. "Yeah. I remember it. Kind of like being at home. But sometimes weirder."

A moment passed before he said, "Weird question, but what's the last thing you remember? Time's a bit...off sometimes." She didn't seem to remember being there before, which meant it was a different version of the person he knew while still being the same person he knew. "Never sure what to expect. Haven't seen Wournos around yet, so that's one Christmas nightmare I've avoided." Which was a lie because he'd have felt a little less off kilter with Nathan around but neither of them really took the time to admit it. "Gas leaks are still popular in these parts, though. It's basically like Vince and Dave are here, but without Vince and Dave."

When Duke mentioned Nathan in the way that he did, it produced a small eye-roll from Audrey - the sort she always gave those two when they decided to have their little pissing contests. Even if things were tense back home right now, they could be a little mature about things. Audrey wanted them to get along. Audrey wanted to feel like she could fully trust Duke - she felt like she could she could deep down in her bones, but her mind still had doubts.

"So we're stuff in Haven, Texas instead of Haven, Maine?" She didn't mean literally, of course. Audrey sighed, shifted weight from one foot to the other, and ran a hand through her hair. "Okay, well, at least there's some stuff from home. I mean, some of my stuff is here, anyways." It seemed to random, but there had to be a pattern and Audrey wanted to know why.

She leaned her hip against the couch near her and looked at Duke. "As for what I remember... well, I mean, it's hard to tell. This could all be some sort of Trouble and I've been given new memories, again. But the last thing I did was go as you about your dad and we found out he wants you to kill me." Fun times.

That far back. Duke ran his fingers through his hair. "Yeah, well, you know I never listen to anything my dad says." And he hadn't. The truth of it was the in order to end the Troubles, she had to go in and they'd all agreed until Nathan decided to unagree and then shot the guy that made the whole thing run. Then he'd run in and tried to find Audrey. When he fell out of the barn, he'd been in Texas. He'd read a little about Boston and meeting a girl who he'd end up with who would die. She hadn't shown up yet either and he'd avoid that as best as he could.

"All these old fashioned ideas." But that was his Trouble. He frowned slightly. "Saw Dad's ghost and he tried to convince me that I needed to, but turns out I'm a very poor listener. Who'd have thought, right?" He peered at Audrey. "We've all been through a lot since what you last remembered." As long as that was really what she last remembered.

"So you planning on sticking around, then? Cause I'm not sure I want to try to rent to someone else. As for the stuff, you can always ask the portal for whatever you want or just buy new things, I guess. There's a whole police department here even."

It was hard to listen to what Duke was saying, though Audrey's mind filed away the whole 'police department' thing away for another moment and focused on what he said and what was implied. Her brow furrowed a little the way it did when she was trying to connect the dots. She held up a hand, palm out. "Hold up." Was Duke saying what she thought he was saying. "Are you telling me you're from a different moment of our history? That you've experienced more than me?"

She blinked, trying to process. She believed Duke, but that didn't mean it wasn't hard to process. That would mean Duke knew a lot more about her than she did of him. That left her feeling a little uneasy.

"... I think I'm going to need a drink."

Duke kept his expression neutral, but he felt a little bad once she reacted to it. Clearly she was upset. But it was easier to play off anything he was feeling. She was still at a point where there was a lot of information not explained and there were things about him she didn't know. Things about her and him she didn't know. Especially the things pertaining to his Trouble.

"Yeah. Couldn't let you have all the fun, could I?" But he motioned out the door. "Happen to know a place. Seems to be plenty there still. You can ask questions." What else could he offer at this point?

She smiled at the 'happen to know a place' and nodded, headed for the door. Maybe she should go see if her handgun was in the safe she kept it in, but right now a drink sounded better. Besides, Duke had a shot gun, right?

Audrey was quiet until she was sitting at the bar on a fat-tool familiar bar stool that shouldn't be in Texas. Still, she was grateful for the Gull being here.

"Okay." She let out a breath. "How about I start with an obvious one. You said 'planning on sticking around' like I didn't stick around before. So-" Audrey looked at Duke pointedly. "Was I here before? If so, did I remember more about who I really am?"

Duke slipped behind the counter, pouring a couple drinks before handing one to Audrey. He wasn't technically working, so it wasn't like he could really get into any trouble. Plus, it was his place. He was going to need to get a business model in place again. He sighed at the thought.

"Well, you have, yes. You knew more than I did. But I meant mostly if you were going to take your old place. I missed some things." He wasn't sure what she wanted to know or if there was anything that she wanted to know. He wasn't sure he had the answers. "Our lives are a TV show here. Haven't watched it, but read the highlights."

"Wait, what?" Her brow furrowed as she tried to process that and then her forehead softened and she sighed. "Of course it is. It just makes sense that other people would find our lives entertaining." It felt like the universe was hitting her in the stomach - she had no idea who she was or what was happening to her, but people could know by watching some tv show? It was a joke. Audrey took a long pull from her drink. Maybe she should pace herself, but whatever.

"Okay... so." She paused. She wanted to ask 'who am I?' The question of obvious on her face as she stared at Duke... but she was also apprehensive and worried about what the answer could be. Did she want to know?

"Never mind."

She took another sip of her drink, then put her elbow on the table and leaned her forehead on her hand for a moment. This was a little harder to process than the Troubles were, it seemed. After a moment in silence, she sighed and looked back up as if steeling herself.

"Okay. Well, you tell me what highlights you want to tell me. Like maybe start with are we okay?" She gestured between the two of them. "What about you and Nathan? Do we stop the Troubles?"

Duke could see the question forming and he waited for her to ask, but then she didn't. She gave him control of what he told her. He wasn't sure where to start on that end.

"Starters. I'm Troubled. Turns out my family's Trouble is that if we kill someone, we can end a Trouble for good. Downside to that is killing people. I once had a man run into a knife on purpose so that I'd end his Trouble for him and his family." He wasn't sure that it was a good way to start things. "We found things we thought would stop the Troubles, but they didn't pan out.You can't explode the Barn."

He thought casually. "The Barn is the only thing that stops them." He sighed. There were things that were complicated to explain without explaining who Audrey was beneath all the multiple personalities.

"There's kind of a lot. When I showed up, you'd just gone back into the barn and Nathan shot the FBI guy that ran it. I ran into the Barn as it was imploding and then I ended up here. Apparently I end up in Boston back home and this girl and I manage to get back to Haven and we find you or what's left of the Barn. We get you back, but you've got to pretend to be someone else to avoid having to kill Nathan." Also your son's wife is a serial killer. It was probably not wise to hit with that, too.

That was a lot to take in. She sat there staring at him for a moment. She believed him, despite her look of disbelief. So much had happened for Duke and he knew so much more than that. Audrey was, once again, playing catch up to her own life. It'd be nice to get ahead once in her lifetime... lifetimes?

"Okay. So. You're Troubled." She had seen that first hand on the boat. It made sense to her. "And there's this barn apparently that stops the troubles. And we were going to stop the Troubles with it, but then Nathan shot the guy who sent me to Haven in the first place - I'm assuming - and... things went to hell after that." She blinked. "Does that sum things up? I'm just trying to get things straight in my head. I don't think I'll be able to be up to your knowledge of events any time soon, but I don't want to be in the dark, either."

"That's the jist of it, yeah." He didn't really want to get into all the Mara-related stuff because he was already sharing a lot. "We can take our time getting through everything, probably. Or you can watch the show or read up on everything."

He wasn't sure he wanted to be the one to break the Mara stuff to her, but then he hadn't really lived it, so it wasn't like he could explain it. It wasn't helpful to give the information and have missing pieces. He was sure there were things missing because even the stuff up to what he remembered had things missing, details he knew should have been in a comprehensive history of his life since Audrey showed up. "Probably better not to overdo it." A beat. "But knowing you, you won't let it rest until you have the answers you need."

She took a long pull from her drink and exhaled a little as she placed the drink back down on the table top. At least the alcohol felt normal. Duke also felt normal, despite him technically being from her future.

"No, you're right." She paused. "I mean, about not over-doing it." Audrey took another sip. "Don't get me wrong - I'm going to do research and figure things out, but I might as well do it in pieces so I can actually understand it all."

She suddenly smiled and leaned on the counter top. "Okay, enough about me. I'm tired of talking about me... what about you? How long have you actually been here?"

Duke glanced at the calendar, almost laughing. "Exactly four months today." Which felt like a lot longer than it had before he noticed. Things here sort of happened really fast and a lot. "It's been a really long four months."

He smiled slightly. "The Rouge is here. Docked..." He peered at the phone for a moment. "Somewhere on the coast of India, I think. I've probably gotta move it soon, but..." He shrugged. He'd get to it. He was considering going to Japan next. "Got a portal in my closet at the apartment I'm staying so I can go between there and the Rouge."

He looked at Audrey again. "So you ever need an escape, just let me know. We can go pretty much wherever."

"A portal in your closet.... of course you do." She smiled. If anyone could find a way to get to places with ease, it would be Duke. Having a portal in his closet was definitely his style, too. She wondered if it was there to hide it or if Duke had no control over it at all and it was a fluke it was even there. "I'm glad the Rouge is there, though. Maybe now that we're both stuck here and there's no Troubles to solve, I can actually take you up on a ride on her." It would be weird to have downtime. Audrey wasn't sure she could handle too much downtime. Was this a forced vacation?

"I'm interested to know how or why it's on the coast of India. I mean, that's pretty far away. Why not somewhere around here?" Which was her roundabout way of asking if he was smuggling again.

Duke nodded. "Lots of people with magic here. It's one of those weird things you have to get used to. Had someone shrink the boat to move it in the first place and then unshrink it when we got to Corpus Christie." She was gone now. He'd escaped having to pay back that favor. He felt lucky for that. "You should try it sometime. It might make you seem like less of a cop." A light tease.

"How, I took it there. Why? Well, why not?" Was he smuggling again? Of course he was, but he only brought enough things through customs to go unnoticed when he brought other things through the portal and didn't worry about customs. "India's a great place to see."

She stared at him with a small smile like she knew he was leaving something out, but then she let it go with a slightly amused. "Okay." Audrey didn't really mind if he broke the law through smuggling as long as smuggling wasn't anything terrible like people and she didn't think Duke would do that unless it was smuggling people out of a bad situation.

"Well, I'll take you up on the offer sometime, then." She finished off her drink and tilted her head. "There's nothing wrong with me coming off as a cop, bu the way." Though she was still smiling. "I happen to think it suits me just well, thank you very much. Besides, if we're stuck here together, we need to compliment one another. You, the bad boy, me the fun police." Her smile widened to an almost-laugh.

Duke was a strict 'no people' smuggler, so Audrey had nothing to worry about.

"I'm just telling you. Being a normal person once in a while makes you more relatable." He liked her either way, but he was loathe to admit it, so he absolutely refused. On principle. "The fun police? I hate to tell you this, but there's nothing fun about cops, Audrey. Not even the ones I like."

Audrey sent him a small challenging look of amusement. "Hey, police have flashing likes and loud sirens. Both of those can be fun." Unless those things were being used to pursue you, which probably Duke had more experience with than she did.

"Alright, fine. But it'd not exactly like I can see myself doing anything else. I mean, what should I do instead? Bartend?" She gestured to the alcohol. "Not that I actually know, but from what I do know, I've never mixed a drink outside of a college dorm before."

"Maybe if you're in a club, yeah." He hadn't really been to a club in a while, though. He'd been to a few places in Mexico and he had a plan to go to New Orleans before with Audrey, but they'd never gotten there.

He arched an eyebrow. "Audrey hasn't. Who knows what the other yous have done." But he intended to handle the bartending in this instance. "Plus, you have me for all your drink mixing needs. So you'll be fine even if you are sadly inept." He didn't mention he had a feeling a version of her had done the bartending thing. That was after his time.

"I guess I have to be inept at something." She joked, looking at him and then suddenly sighing. Audrey ran a hand through hair. "I can't tell you how this -" she gestured between the two of them "- feels way better than it did when I came from. It honestly sucked. A lot." And it sometimes kept her up at night trying to figure out if Duke had truly chosen to do things she couldn't forgive. The fact Duke hadn't been able to say whether or not he would have stopped the Rev from killing that girl had cut deep, but this Duke - she didn't feel like he'd let it happen at all.

"I missed this."

"Don't get too sentimental." He'd missed Audrey. He missed Nathan. He even missed Sasquatch. Hell, even Vince and Dave. It was something to have a shadow version of them around and not the real version. "Well, that's just cause I was still looking for answers." And she hadn't yet asked him to use his Trouble. That was a whole other thing.

"Now the Rev isn't the one lording information over me, which works out better for me anyway."

She still felt her chest seize a little when thinking of the Rev, though she'd do what she did again in a heartbeat. Could she had shot at his leg or his shoulder? Yes. But the Rev was going to continue to hurt people who were Troubled and she couldn't let him do that. He might have thought he was fighting monsters, but Audrey thought he was the monster instead.

Audrey pushed the empty glass a little toward Duke. "I should probably go up and keep doing inventory of what's there... then probably take a shower because I feel like I have no idea how long portal travel takes." She was admittedly a little fuzzy on how she ended up in the Bureau.

"Can't take up all of Duke Crocker's precious time." She grinned.

"Thanks." She paused. Had there not been a counter between them, she might have given him a hug. She knew for him it had been longer than for her who had seen him recently. Instead, she settled on a nod as she stood up. "Promise not to be a stranger." She gave him a wink and then headed out toward her apartment.
