It's not meant to be a celebration of death. It is a recognized holiday in other countries and predates the settling of the original colonies. But the celebration of Thanksgiving in the United States is entangled with a sanitized history about how the settlers were starving and the natives brought them food. They neglect to address how the settlers would treat the Native Americans after.
Culturally, there's been an increasing shift to draw attention to the truth of our country's history. Some chose not to celebrate because of this. Others chose to focus on family and gratitude, which was what it was originally intended to be.
