WHO: Teachers & Students at Magic Class
WHAT: Learning wandless magic with Julia, Marina & Pixie
WHEN: Tuesdays and Thursdays in July
WHERE: A random abandoned building!
WARNINGS: TBD
STATUS: OOC/IC

© TESSISAMESS

Hey! Want to know what your character is actually learning if they go to A Hedges' Guide to Magic™ class? This is the post for you! Classes are every Tuesday and Thursday. We're not going to be doing IC/OOC posts for each class, that would be way too much. This is going to be a once a month occurrence.

True, your character will still probably have a preference for their first style of magic that they were taught. But need to open a lock without a wand? Do something small and sneaky? Give your character an edge when the moment strikes for their big dramatic moment? Having them attend this class will justify that.

Plus doing magic this way is fun. Magic in general is fun, but this way is super fun. Check out the comments where you can mark your character's attendance, see what they were taught and give some flavor. Did they struggle? Have to practice? Get frustrated and stop going?

You're not going to want to miss the first exam.

Let's hit the comments!

Did you attend every class? Miss a few? Have trouble on any particular day? Need a little extra help? Try to cheat? Mark it here with any little bit of flavor text you would like to add.

July 10th: Intro, Syllabus & Demonstrations. Julia, Marina and Pixie are here to teach you a brand new style of magic. They'll go over the kinds of spells they hope you'll be able to cast wandless, but it's going to require perfecting a lot of hand gestures first.

July 12th: Intro to Poppers I. Four little hand gestures. They look small but you have to get them just right. If you do, sparkles! Yay! If not? Try, try again.

July 17th: Intro to Poppers II. In addition to what you learned last week, you're going to learn four more. Those of you getting the material might start learning to combine them for larger effects. Those of you still struggling? Better practice, practice, practice.

July 19th: Intro to Poppers III. Think it was going a little slow last week? Today they're piling on eight new hand gestures and getting more into combinations. Getting it? Falling behind? Head of the class? (Everyone hates the head of the class.)

July 24th: Intro to Poppers IV. Another eight poppers. Another class of practicing combinations. Are you sick of it? Where's the practical application? The drama? Hm?

July 26th: Examples of Spells. Spells aren't just in musty old tomes. Hedges have a number of ways of finding them and hiding them where such things are scarce. The basic intro to A Hedges' Guide to Finding Magic When Shit Is Scarce™. Aren't you glad it wasn't another popper?

July 31st: EXAM DAY! See the special comment for this.

Julia is teaching, obvs, so of course she's there. She was, however, absent on July 12th. Does Marina say anything? Because Julia sure as hell isn't offering an explanation.

Lol. If anyone asked, Marina was probably like, "What does that have to do with your lesson right now? Nothing."

Marina is teaching, so also obviously there. Julia and Pixie are probably your nice teachers. Marina is your sarcastic asshole teacher. She's teaching you and she'll assure you that you'll know what you're doing if you actually try, but also she's just a sarcastic person.

Bonnie's very curious, so she will likely turn up for every lesson. She already does wandless magic, so she's curious if she can do it through the methods the Magicians do with the hand gestures. Can she pull the spell of that way or is it happening because of her typical magic? Though I don't think she can just create sparkles her own way, so that will definitely be a sign if she's going about it the wrong or right way. The hand gestures are probably going to make her twitch the most. Is she finding what she needs because she sometimes just happens to know where shit is/can sense things, or because she's doing it the way they taught? Boo, relearning things.

Like relearning a language times ten? Julia feels yeah. She'll spend a little extra time with Bonnie to make sure she isn't accidentally using her own magic style if that helps. Possibly come up with a few combinations that have a distinctly Magicians Style effect so Bonnie can tell if she's doing the forms correctly or not.

That would be awesome, thanks! She would very much appreciate that. Otherwise it would be too easy for her to slip into her own way of doing and she might not always realize it. Or she'll just get annoyed and be like WHATEVER THIS WAY IS FINE.

Julia will try and come up with different combos which create temporary, harmless effects. Is it practical? No. But fun? Hopefully? And then she can see the difference.

Get the gestures right and she'll be able to do cooperative and bigger stuff later. :D :D :D

Luna is going to be there, but it won't be till the 17th, because of Disney. I know she already had magic class with Eliot, but she was more doing her own stuff than Magicians stuff if I remember correctly, so she's curious a little about this. She'll probably pick things up okay if someone gives her a general rundown of the other things. I mean...she's Luna. She's used to specific wand movements for spells, so specific hand movements doesn't feel new and spells are always about intent. I mean, she might not get things right away, but I feel like she's doing pretty okay with it.

She probably isn't really trying to make a big thing of it, though. She'll do what she can to help Harry, too, if he's struggling.

Fleur was there! She is very pro-adventure and learning new things, so I imagine she enjoyed herself. Fleur is completely done with her schooling and has been working/training with the Order for several months now, so she was probably pretty decent in spite of the learning curve.

Julia enjoyed working with Fleur and was impressed. She might occasionally have given Fleur a few more challenging things to try since she was taking well to it.

Woops, I forgot Cho was coming to this. She was probably okay as long as she wasn't distracted. She'll be careful to learn the hand movements and everything as it is. Probably she has to work a little on willing the magic into existing because it was a little easier for her back home, but by the end of the month, she'll be doing much better.

Severus - Attendance & Lesson Plans
[info]imbittered

Severus will be attending all of the sections, working rather intently to learn things. He's a perfectionist, and he's going to be frustrated when he can't make something work. He'll probably work on hand gestures between classes and try to come back knowing at least some of the the things they did the work before. It's completely outside of his typical ability to do things, but he's persistent and he's a perfectionist, so he'll catch on.

Marina will try to not be quite so Marina, but just kind of still be Marina...and tell him to quit focusing so much and feel it. And then sit there and wait, eyebrow arched.

Julia is probably more throw Severus into the deep end because her expectations of him are higher than the others. So like, she has a lot of confidence in his ability to figure it out and isn't that much more helpful than Marina. >>

Severus doesn't need hand-holding, just the opportunity to practice a fair amount. Probably. Anyway.

EXAM DAY
[info]hurlyburly
2018-07-14 05:38 pm UTC (link)

Were you worried the Hedges were being too nice? You knew there was an exam today. Did you study? Practice? Wonder about the test? Get anxiety? Feel like you have it in the bag?

Sure the first month was kind of a slog. You might not have even barely gotten the poppers to work for you at all. But when it comes to practical application there might be surprises. The brightest students might freeze and the stress of the test might be what finally motivates you to get it right.

Or not. We'll see.

The Exam.
Today you went to class, just like the days before, only instead of ending up in the usual spot you found yourself with one other student in a locked room and a note: find the spell and get yourself out using only magic covered in the course.

Simple, right?

The rooms are tailored to each pair of students in terms of difficulty and relative danger. Maybe being the head of the class wasn't so great after all? When you think about the exam, how you did, answer the following questions...

1. Who were you paired with? (There may be a few singles and triples, but most students were paired up. Talk to players and plan it out.) The instructions said you only had to get yourself out. Did you help your partner?

2. What did the room look like? Where there any doors? Windows? Where in the world are you anyway? What kind of stuff is in there? How hot is it? How cold is it? What does it smell like? This is your chance to show off.

3. What was the spell they needed and where did they find it? Keep in mind the spell will be relatively simple and might not even be to get out of the room itself. Maybe just to help keep them safe until they think of a muggle solution? Hedges know best of all-- not everything is solved with magic.

Do you pass with flying colors? (Probably won't be as interesting if you make it too easy on yourself.) Do you fail and one of the instructors has to pull you out? Sticking with the class after this or calling it quits?

(Poke Becky or Kaitlin if you need a little more guidance.)

Have a question? Leave it here.

Don't worry if it takes you a while to come up with the exam. It isn't until the end of the month so you technically have some time to come up with something fitting for your character.
