How would you like some research work?

I wouldn't say no to it.

Fantastic. I've just given the details to Lois.

Always.

This have to do with what I was looking into earlier or something else?

Similar. We still want to figure out what happened to the military base in this variation on the timeline but since they've hidden all the obvious files we need to come at it sideways. It's mostly going to mean a lot of going through church and land tax records to see who came into the area in 1953-54 and who left when the base closed, checking the back issues of small local papers and newsletters, things like that. It will probably involve visiting some of the nearby towns since most things are likely to be on microfiche and undigitised. Your best bet is probably genealogical societies and local libraries.

I've already scoured through the local papers microfiche for that time period. I can give my notes a look through and can get you a report on what I've found out that way after comparing it to what we can learn through the various church and land records.

Handy. I take it there wasn't much of use? It's getting into the area where they'd be more careful about keeping things under wraps, but I figured it was still worth checking.

No, but that doesn't mean things won't become more useful after going down a few more avenues.

That was my logic with the records as well. Get enough small pieces and they might start to form a bit of a pattern. They sure as hell haven't left us with much else.

They always leave something behind. No matter how good the clean up.

At a certain point the coverup starts drawing more attention than what you're trying to hide. It's a judgment call I've had to make a few times myself.

The fact that no one seems to remember what actually happened around here not even twenty-four days after it happened might have helped them out a bit though.

Definitely. We had Retcon, but we had to give it to people individually and ideally reinforce the normal explanation a little. No way to affect memory on a wide scale like happens here.

But the former military knew?

Our standard military didn't know anything. UNIT did. They're under the authority of the United Nations and mostly seem to operate like SHIELD does for the Marvel universes. Though... hopefully without all the Nazis.

I mean the former military that's here. The ones who were stationed a the base.

From what I've read they didn't seem to be affected by whatever is altering the minds of anyone else.

Oh, them. Honestly I'm not sure if we've figured out if any of them are even still alive. When we got back from the cruise it looked like everyone who was at the base was killed by whatever came out of the portal that day. Presumably some people were off-duty, but I suppose it depends how badly the government wanted to cover things up.

There is no feasible way for every single one of them to have been there that day. Not unless they showed up to try and help once a red alert was sent out. But I believe I read that the base had gone on lockdown. Though that doesn't explain what happened to whatever creatures were responsible for the attack.

Yeah, the lockdown would have been too quick to allow backup to arrive. Hopefully we'll find some of the others in property records.

I like to believe that whatever creatures did it disappeared back the same way we do.

I'm not one to backdown without an answer.

Better than them being out in the world still.
